Soft slippers - strange feet - advice?

Hi,

I did a placement class yesterday en discovered a few things about keeping balance. When I tried them out at home, I felt it was easier to balance when on socks or barefeet then on slippers (I have full soles, canvas, Papillon).
Then I got thinking…
When wearing the slippers, I feel like I can’t “spread my toes”. I automatically seem to “curl” them or something.
I must add that I have always (since childhood) had holes in my socks wheer my big toe (which is pretty long) goes and also tend to have holes in my shoes (gym shoes, even rubber tips, like all stars) or worn spots (leather) at the same place. It’s not caused by shoes being too small or toenails too long, I tried that. My father has the same problem, so I guess it’s something to do with the shape of our feet. I guess we pull upn our toes or something.
Now back to ballet.

Do you think I should just dance on socks, or is it better to wear slippers (flats)?
If so, I think I’ll try a bigger size and see if this helps me “spread out”.
Would this help?
Does anyone recognize the problem?

Also, if wearing soft slippers, what’s the best way to wear the elastic band? A single one in a loop, a single one across or a double one crossed?

Thanks everyone!

Practicing en pointe at home

What is the best flooring to practice pointe on at home? Although most of my house is carpeted, there is some wood floor in it and also concrete in our garage. Which would be better to practice on?
