The Guangzhou Ballet Troupe, one of China’s largest ballet companies, went to the West Coast for a performance on Friday, October 21st, at the Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver.

I have just seen my first ballet performance and I find it very interesting. I was told I watched a contemporary ballet, but it looked like the usual “classical” ballet that I’ve always imagined it to be. What is the difference between classical ballet and contemporary ballet?
Thanks
Richard

The Manassas Ballet Theatre company will perform “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on Saturday October 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday October 23 at 3 p.m.
The production opens the company’s 2011-12 season, which also includes “The Nutcracker,” “Peter and the Wolf” and “Swan Lake.” All productions are held at the Hylton center and accompanied by the Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra.
The ballet is an interpretation of the classic short story by Washington Irving, in which Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones battle for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, and an encounter with the mysterious Headless Horseman one autumn evening tips the scales in one suitor’s favor.

I’m 5 foot 4 inches tall and I’m concerned that I’ve gained weight. Is there an ideal weight for ballerinas like me?
Thanks,
Jessica

I have always loved ballet and it is something I have always wanted to do but my parents could never afford to pay for lessons. Now I’m 27 and I still really love ballet. I want to get involved and experience some of what I missed out on. Problem is, I have a foot injury that prevents me from physical activities like dancing. How do you think I can best become involved in the ballet world besides dancing?
Thanks
Katherine

Since its appearance in 2005, the 60-member National Ballet of China has fully embraced “modernism.”
Someone once said that ballet and modern dance would merge when a contemporary dancer donned toe shoes and ballerinas went barefoot. Well, that did happen in an Alvin Ailey piece years ago, and it was evident again last week in the dance kickoff of “China: The Art of a Nation,” at the Kennedy Center now through October.
