Discover the Secrets to Conquering Some of The Most Common Pitfalls You Face When Learning Ballet
All the other girls think I don’t have the right body for balletI have just started going to a dance school and all the girls there have really good figures. They think i shouldn't do ballet cause I dont have the right body for it and that I'm too fat for ballet. I don't know what to do. I don't want this to get in my way of what I love to do. Does body shape really matter and will it affect my chances of getting in to anything good? July 10, 2006 | In Questions |6 Comments »RSS feed for comments on this post. I’m sure others will comment with more professional answers to your question (I’m only a “dancer’s mom.” However, I do want to encourage you to continue with the dance classes. Apparently, the girls who were telling you not to continue haven’t seen much ballet. I too thought that a heavy person wouldn’t be effective at ballet, but I have seen some very graceful heavy-set women and girls perform ballet.
Don’t let the other girls discourage you. If ballet is really what you want to do and you put your mind to it, you will be able to become a “prima ballerina” and outperform the slimmer girls in the process.
You go girl!!!

I have to agree with Elle’s mum. My daughters dance school has a beautiful dancer who is not the right body shape but we all watch her in awe. She is even the strongest in the school. I think that if you have a dream, then you should follow it no matter what. If someone tells my daughter that she can’t do something, then my response to her is “prove them wrong”. Keep it up if its something you truly love.

First off, don’t stop dancing. I would talk to the teacher about the situation, maybe (s)he can make them stop.

I am quite thin for my height and age but when i get to a ballet class i feel fat and the need to lose weight. Nobody has a perfect body for ballet, some of the best dancers weigh more than the really stick thin ones

really, even if you are heavy set, dance helps a lot as a weight loss “program”. I have lost some weight doing ballet
