  1. in response to your first question, it is not necessary to have huge arches to make it in the ballet world. as long as you use what you have, you should do fine. and your arches will develope over time as you continue to dance.
    the answer to your second question is your big toe should continue the line of your foot. it should be straight, otherwise you will weaken your arch.
    as for your third question, this concerns me because your flats shouldn’t really need broken in. I have seen this problem in many low quality shoes though. where did you get your flats? you should always get them from a store that specializes in danceware, not a department store that sells cheap danceware or shoes. if there is no such store where you live you can order them from a dance supply company.

  3. I wear Bloch brand flats. Capezio and sansha are also good brands. there are others, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head. any that are available through a business that specializes is danceware.

  5. if you think your shoes are too big, they probably are. your flats should fit kind of like socks, with no room between the shoe and your foot, but not tight enough it hurts or your toes curl. it also help if the elastic is sewn on correctly and the drawstrings are tightened. also if you are wearing full soles your foot won’t look as pointed as it would in split soles.

  7. Signs your ballet flats are too big:
    Slip off the heel frequently (too long, go down half a size)
    Excess baggyness around the arch along sides of foot (too wide, go down a width)
    Excess material across toes (too big and/or too wide)
    Excess material at sides of toes but overall length is snug and fine (you may be wearing a squarer type of shoe with a tapered foot, choose a different style of shoe).

    Ballet flats don’t need to be broken in, you just have to keep working on pointing your feet till it becomes second nature. Although leather ones will tend to stretch out over a few weeks (or months if you only have one class a week)

    I think a good ballet shoe fits like a glove and has a non-slip sole. According to my teacher, Split sole enhances the LOOK of your arch, but full sole WORKS and IMPROVES your arch more than split sole, so she prefers all students to wear full soles.

    The best brand is the one that makes the shape that most perfectly matches your foot.

    It sounds as if you have fairly low arches, and this is why its not showing when you point your foot. Practice harder in your full soles and your arches will improve somewhat with time and practice as your muscles of your foot increase their ability to contract. Or buy a pair of split soles and it’ll look instantly better, but don’t forget to keep working your feet!

  8. I recognize this problem (and yes, split soles look great).

    I also have difficulties pointing my foot (I guess part of the problem is that I’ve been riding horses for 20 years, multiple hours a week, and only started ballet a couple of months ago, once a week, and I’m still trying to find a way to tell my feet I want them to point and not flex now! LOL).

    Anyway, I noticed I get cramps quite easily when pointing (at the bottom of my feet, not the toes) and especially when ‘rolling over’ (stretching your foot).

    Any ideas on
    a) what causes this
    b) what I can do about it

    Is it possible my flats are not big enough? (Full soles.) I tried split soles and this was ok at the bottom, but they hurt my toes and the size above was too wide, so no luck there. And yes, it was at a special store, so I guess the advice was sound.)

  9. Split soles will make your feet look better, but full sole shoes will make youtry harder to point your foot as you can not see the point in your foot as well as you can wearing split soles. If you really wanted to get split sole, alternate between them and full soles. There are shoes out there (pointe and flats) for every type of foot and arch so don’t eorry too much about that!

  10. The above poster is right, split soles will make your feet look more pointed, but I suggest you check with your teacher before buying some, because some sylabusses and some schools don’t allow them.

  11. in response to your question Kaat, if your flats were too small, you would feel it when standing flatin your toes first. probably your toes would be curling slightly. the reason for you cramping is this is one of the muscles that works hardest when pointing your foot. because you have only been dancing for a short time, this muscle is weak and needs strengthening. also make sure you are eating enough potassium and calcium to help your muscles work well.

I am a man who enjoys being flexible fast nimble and having an unasuming body so while I dont plan to do ballet recitals I do do it for health and must comment on the from Kaat good for you having a comfortable relaxed everyday way of excercise is healthy sometimes I do the fountain pose without thinking(yaknow grab one leg and ark so you make a kinda D shape with your arm leg and back standing on one leg) and if you do you pointe when ever you can in line at mcdonalds at the bus stop in line at the bank you will be the best

  15. yes I just remembered take a shoe macking class at a collage(not a big one) you can learn a lot and one day like me either make your own shoes or rebuild that “perfect” shoe also split sole is great ONLY if you already know what your doing else you can actualy hurt yourself(like displaced bones for example I have heard) plus proper shoes can only be your choice you WILL spend money lots go through i few pairs one a month untill you find the one pair I wear bloch dance sneakers which are split sole and are $60 about depending on the store and a mens ballet shoe i found black satin canvas and a rare male toebox(wider but still rounded and thicker top to bottom) enjoy and I hope I helped you at least a little
