Becoming a Dance Instructor

Hey! Im 15 and I have started taking ballet again after not taking it for 2 years. I have previously taken ballet for 2 years and was going to go on pointe. I have also taken tap, modern, and jazz. When i previously took dancing, i wanted to become a dance instructor and possibly even start my own studio. So considering my age and the amount of training i have (3 years total) what are my chances of becoming a dance instructor? November 7, 2006 | In Questions | 2 Comments

  1. I’m of the mind that anyone can become a dance instructor if they reach adequate expertise.

    I don’t know if you’re good enough, since I don’t know what’s standard experience for instructors or how to have that evaluated. Best chance would probably be to ask your instructors, or if they have an organization or something. In theory, even someone who doesn’t know dance could open their own studio, but it’s what they provide the students, along with any certification/organization/opportunity/recognition that they have which guarantees success.

    Another thing is how to work with your students, as even the best dancer/martial artist/athlete may suck as a teacher if they don’t have motivational skills, organization and patience with others. Starting off as an assistant instructor under someone more experienced probably helps to develope those qualities.

  2. Make sure you have the kind of dedication it takes to be a dance teacher. Not only do you have to know steps but understand the correct technique behind them to be able to impart real knowledge to your students. Also, teachers who have had solid performance experience have an understanding of the art, and how to teach it, that people who have only been “certified” do not have. I am a little concerned that at 15, and having “dropped in and out” of dance, you might not realize what you are taking on when you think you want to be a dance instructor. If you just want to run a few classes for fun, fine, but if you are seriously thinking of teaching other people, better take a closer look at what you are getting into.
