As someone who is still developing her arabesque, I know it’s difficult to get a good arabesque! So the first thing you need to do is barre work. Stand in first position at the barre, and raise and lower your outer leg as high as you can trying to move your upper body as little as possible, and not moving your standing leg. Both legs should be turned out. Do both sides. Then try it away from the bar and see how long you can hold it. Your body and standing leg should remain as close to first position as possible. Once you have that down, try doing it relevĂ©. Stand in arabesque (first second or third), and try to balance in relevĂ©. Arabesques are a test of three things, strength, flexibility and balance, so you must improve all of these to get a good arabesque. Ideally your raised leg should be at a 90 degree angle to your body, but no higher even if you can get the flexible.

It’s important to get your leg in he right place, try practising your arabesques infont of a mirror so you can see if the leg is going right behind you.
You need to be thinking about your turnout, both the supporting leg and the working leg should be turned out.
You need to have the flexibility to raise your leg high, if you don’t then try doing some stretches (Don’t push yourself too hard or you will injure yourself)
And you need to have the strength top hold your leg in the position, you can practise your arabesqyes which will improve this, and you may consider doing them with ankle weights on, this should help to build up the required muscles.
