  1. A high arch is athestically good for ballet, especially en pointe, but it can cause some problems in normal life.
To see if you have a high arch: wet the bottoms of your feet, then step onto the bathroom(or kitchen) floor, now look at your foot print if you can just see the toes ball and heel with a gap in the middle then you have a high arch.

  2. If you put your hand over your feet and if you see that there is a big gap between your hand and foot then that means that you have a high arch.

  3. Dear Geane,

Abbie’s tip to identify a high arch is an especially reliable technique to use. Another way is to sit on the floor with both legs stretched out straight in front of you. Keep your knees straight and keep the thighs and calves and heels of each leg touching the floor, then point your toes and try to touch the floor with the tips of your toes. If your toe tips come within about an inch off the floor, you probably have high arches.

One of the dancers at our studio can not only do this, she can arch her feet and can still place the full length of her toes flat on the floor – both with her legs facing forward or in a full straddle split. Needless to say she has very high arches that look stunning in pointe shoes.

However, this natural gift can also present its own challenges. Aside from the more mundane hassels of not being able to fit certain types of street shoes, such as loafers, super high arches often mean the ankles are weaker and have to be strengthened to perform safely on pointe. It also often means that the dancer’s ankle tendons are not as supple as they should be, which results in shallow plies and can affect the height of the dancer’s leaps. The dancer at our studio overcame both of these issues by doing slow ankle stretches after ballet classes on a “Pro-step” ankle stretcher to stretch her Achilles tendons and by balancing on one foot at a time while watching TV at home and throwing a ball back and forth from hand to hand to strengthen her ankles.

One other problem for dancers with high arches, is that they can easily over whelm the shank of their toe shoes – taking them from broken-in to needing to be replaced in only a few wearings. Because of this, the dancer with high arches has to search for shoes that have really strong shanks and she needs to be careful when breaking in new pointe shoes, not to overwork them and accidently “crack” the shanks.

I hope this extra info will be of help.

    Happy dancing,
    Elizabeth
