Help! Arabesque!Whenever I do a 90 degrees arabesque to the back, my back always arches a lot, instead of staying straight. HELP!! January 26, 2007 | In Questions | 6 Comments6 Comments »RSS feed for comments on this post. TrackBack URI Leave a comment |

this is normal. it’s not actually physicaly possible to have a straight back when your leg is that high. that said, when you go to arabesque, make sure your shoulders stay upright and don’t tip forward.
happy dancing.

When you are warming up try doing a low arabesque and then go as high as you can keeping are back staight the whole time do this five to six times each time if you still have trouble after a few weeks of doing this ask your teacher for some tips or do a private lesson.

hi i suffer from that aswel
i think if you make sure all your weight is on your standing foot and then stand up really tall and lenghten your neck up. then only lift your leg as far as it will go until your posture starts going bad.
also steady breathing helps

You can also ask a friend to lift your legs as high as you can, facing the barre, without caring much at your back, just making sure you don’t have one shoulder higher than the other one. Then, he “drops” your leg and you try not to let it down.
And also to develop the muscles of your back… flat on your belly, asky somebody to hold your feet and the arms in the fifth position, you try to get straight. Then you can try on youy own, separating your legs. After that, don’t forget to stretch your back, bending towards the floor, on your knee.
Hope it will do !

You’re not supposed to have a perfectly straight back when you arabesque. An arched back it perfectly normal. Just make sure you dont lean forward (unless you have a 180, then you can lean a little) and keep your shoulders parallel. My teacher has been helping me lately and shes working wonders (and killing my back at the same time lol) for me.
