  1. Have you tried talking to the teachers and telling them how you feel, and ask what you can do to improve?

Secondly, from what you say, I am a little in doubt as to how much real teaching is going on. If two classes are combined, and you are in a huge class, it is very difficult to correct everyone. Sometimes teachers “correct” the good ones or play favorites because they don’t have to come up with difficult answers or correct things they don’t really understand how to correct. If you are really unhappy, which is sounds as if you are, have you considered changing schools??

  2. i agree with the person who commented before me…. AND…
    XD
you might not be doing too many obvious things wrong; BUT… for the turnout, squeeze that rump. u heard me, flex ur gluteous maximus! (sorry. i cant spell!) really helps to turn out correctly. (make sure ur knees align with ur feet and watnot. uve probably heard it all before.)
for the feet, do u mean fallen arches? something? or weak feet!?

i have fallen arches, but ive worked them (try standing on demi point often until u ‘feel the burn’.) and i was actually on of the better ones in my class. XD its only a jazz class, but the teacher was really… enthusiastic. also, ive heard about standing on tennis balls from another post’s comment… and soda cans… and that kind of… confused me….

for the flexibility, i know you must have heard it a billion times over, BUT… warm up all the muscles you are going to stretch for at least 5 minutes, and then stretch… CORRECTLY. how ever they teach you to. at home, in the morning, on ur lunch break, before bed…. i dont care. you probably wont, either. XD
you could also consider renting one of those ballet-based workout dvds that include stretches and whatnot. i did a while ago, and then.. i knew more! hooray, knowledge!

  4. is there any other way to get noticed besides talking to the teachers. It was really awkward, we had a week off a school, so our teacher ( the artsisrtic director) told us to do bikrum yoga. My brother started to do it, to help his wrestling, so i thought hey i’ll go with him. So i went and I saw the artistic director there. And i was talking her her. And in the back of my mind I was hoping that at class, she might maby correct me more, because I went to yoga. ( which proves that I really want to improve) nope I was wrong. I was still ignored. I really dont know what to do. It’s weird thinking about changing schools, that would mean leaving my friends, and I have a slight issue about letting go i guess. My mom died a few years ago, and im afraid that if I leave the school, i dont know she might not be happy. I dont really know its hard to explain. Please me though.
    Thanks again,

  5. You could start by just going up to one of the teachers you like (you said one was awesome? or is he/she awesome but unapproachable?) and saying you want to improve very much and would like to know what to do, and tell the teacher you would be really receptive to corrections in class. No teacher could object to that. If they blow you off after that, however, and things don’t change…..then I think you might be in the wrong place, even if your friends are there. The world is a big place, and sometimes you have to find the right place for you. I understand your feelings; but I am sure your mother would not want you to be held back or ignored in ballet (or anything else), even if she put you in that school and thought at the time it was a good idea. You will be able to find friends anywhere you go, it just takes time and patience. I am not sure how old you are, but it sounds like you really love dancing, and it is horrible to be so frustrated in something you love doing.

  6. And be careful with Bikram yoga, it gets a little hot in there and you do not want to get dehydrated. There are other ways to stretch. …. What part of the country do you live in???

  7. i dunno, i just shy around teachers, I dunno, but thanks so much, for all your help i really appreciate it. Ive only done bikrum yoga twice, and the people are really nice and intruct you to drink water in class. And tehy tell you to drink it afterward too, so they are good about that. I live in northern california. Where are you from?

    Thanks again,

p.s. I do really love ballet!!

  9. I understand how you feel about leaving your freinds. I danced with pretty much with the same group of girls from the time I was five to the time I was fifteen. I loved being in class with my freinds. the only problem was I was one of the least talented girls in my class, at least two of them are headed for careers as profesionals, and my teacher spent all of her time on them and was ignoring me in class. I ended up moving to a didderent studio where I could get attention and improve. at first it was hard not seeing my freinds, but I made new freinds and kept in touch with some of the girls I danced with before. at first it was scarry, but it ended up being one of the best things I have ever done. I may still not be as good as some of the girls I grew up with, but I was able to become a good dancer, wich wouldn’t have happened if I had stayed where I was.

  10. Glad to hear they are careful in the yoga class about water!!

Sometimes when a student is shy of teachers, they think the shyness means they don’t want attention, which is the furthest thing from the truth, but not everyone is sensitive to how people really feel. Give talking to them, or one of them, a try. If it doesn’t work then you know you have done everything you could. Just remember how big the world is, which I know is hard sometimes at fourteen, there are always opportunities not far away. There are a lot of schools in Northern California; maybe you could do a summer intensive at another school this year?

  12. Hi neglected,

I agree with the others on the fact that you should not stay in a school where they are holding you back.

As for being shy when speaking to a teacher: sometimes it helps when you start by saying that you don’t feel comfortable disturbing them, but you really want to ask something, and then explain you want to know how you could improve more, ask if it would help to take extra classes, or if it would be possible to get som extra tips, etc.
I know how you feel, I had to ask my teacher weeks in a row to before it finally came trough, but now I feel better about it.
If you still find it difficult to speak to the teacher, try writing down what you want to say first and if that doesn’t help, you could consider writing a letter to the teacher.
It’s quite artificial, but hey, if it helps you to get where you want to be…

Just a note: try not to make the teacher feel “corrected” or “criticized”.
use I-statements in stead of you-statements (not: “you neglect me in class” but “I feel I’m not improving as much as I could and I would really like your advice on this”. And no, that’s not sucking up to the teacher. It’s efficient communication. Remember: HOW you say things is sometimes even more important than WHAT you say.

    Good luck!
