Improve my Technique

HI!
My name is Naomi and I live in Japan.
Girls here go on pointe at age 9 or 10. I didn’t even go on pointe till I was 13! I was shocked! I really want to continue dancing and maybe go to ABT. How can I improve my technique here. Japanese ballet studios are not very good here (I’ve gone to 3 studios already). So I don’t really want to go to another studio. Is there anything I can do by myself?

  • Zoe

Where in Japan do you live? I have a friend who has a school near Tokyo. If you are not near there, perhaps she can recommend a better studio for you.

  • Nancy

Or if worse comes to worse try trying out for a boarding school in another country.

  • Karalyn

Here in the US girls don’t start pointe until 12 or 13 so don’t worry about it. Practicing is the best way to improve.

  • Marissa

practice, take as many classes as you can, work as hard as you can in class. when your teacher gives a correction to someone else, check yourself to see if you need to make that correction too. If you can’t take as many classes as you need at the studio that you are at now, you might consider taking classes at multiple studios or doing yoga or pilates.

  • Naomi

    thanks!
I may have to go to another studio. Because the studio I am going to now isn’t very good.

  • Naomi

    Zoe,
I live in Tokyo. Near Ikebukuro, Shinjiku. If that helps.

  • Zoe

My friend’s name is Reiko Sakamaki, the name of her school is the Reiko Sakamaki School (or Academy maybe) of Ballet. I don’t have her phone number information for the school but I imagine it would be in a directory. Good luck. If you are not close enough to her she might recommend someone.

When you go on pointe is not as important necessarily as the entire scope of your training. I have seen girls start at 9 or 10 because they were entirely ready for it (not necessarily the norm). Others have to wait. Don’t get hung up with what others are doing, or how old anyone is. Focus on yourself and your improvement.

  • geane

i live in NZ new zealand we dont go on pointe till 13 too but once there was this 8 year old who got to go on pointe i was so jelous shes probably crippled though

  • Zoe

What an ugly thing and untrue to say about anyone, that if an 8 year old went on pointe she is probably crippled. Tiler Peck, one of the upcoming stars at New York City Ballet, was on pointe and could do fouettes by the age of 9.

It would be nice if people could focus on improving themselves instead of wasting time and energy on jealousy.

  • geane

you sound like your pretty perfect ae
you dont even know this girl
and any way im just being realistic
tiler peck who ever she is has probably got dancers feet all srong and that

  • cassey

omagosh zoe i cant believe you put 9 year olds on pointe i should call the police jokes but thats real young ae

  • Nancy

Yeah putting a nine year old on pointe um… does not seem to be the best thing in world to do.

  • Zoe

You all are very quick to judge without knowing any givens of a situation, aren’t you? I never said she was my student. I had the good fortune to dance with her in a production of Nutcracker.

If you want to find out who Tiler Peck is you can exercise your brains and google her.

  • Nancy

Guys lets not make this turn into a fight we aren’t babys in anymore.

  • Naomi

Sorry I didn’t mean for this to become a fight. I was just trained differently and I was just a little worried about their health. Plus the pointe shoes they have are terrible. And the padding is so bad. When I first saw the shoes that they were wearing I thought they were “Lets Play Ballet” shoes. They were SO bad. And some of the girls can’t even go up on them because their feet are to weak.
I know some girls that can wear them. But honestly I think that their shoes aren’t good at all.
So I think 1. they aren’t ready to go up on pointe. 2. the shoes are really bad.

    Oh and thanks Zoe.

  • Nancy

Yeah they are SO not ready for pointe yet.

  • Naomi

even older lady’s in their 30 & 40 are on pointe. I think you can on Pointe if you are at that age. But the lady’s that are at my studio can’t go up all the way on to the box.
