it depends on the school you go to. At most schools you don't move up when you turn a year older. at my school you change levels by the end of the semster.

It depends on if your school wants to move you up. Levels depend mainly upon technique, not age, although I'm sure you're with people your age at the moment, because most dance schools have something like Children's Intermediate,Teen Intermidiate, and Adult Intermidiate, that way an adult is not placed with an 8 year old. I don't know where the book got this information, and it may be true if you start ballet at a certain age that those are AVERAGE ages people move up,but still I don't know if I would trust that book to well.

Actually, it also depends on the schooling system you're in.
At my studio, students are divided by age AND ability, so age IS, to a certain extent, important.
We have a system where you start at 4 in children's 1, at 5 (aka the next schoolyear) you go to children's 2 and so on, until you're in your teens.
It's more or less like a regular school system? where you also go from one year to the next and there are special (or extra) lessons if you need or want them to keep up with your peers.
For teens and adults, it's more depending on level than age.
Of course, if you are 14 and starting, they don't put you in the group with the 14s who started at age 4, so for late starters, it's indeed the teacher who decides.
For people who started "on age", it seems rather rare they can't keep up, if they follow the required classes.
I guess the curricullum is especially designed for a one-year system, like in school.

Your birthday has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you are ready to move up. Your teacher is the best judge of when you are ready to move.

I agree. It all depends on how good you are, your techinique. sometimes it depends on when your teachers think you are ready to move up. Just do your best in every class and eventually it will happen!!!!!!

Whether you change levels or not does not depend on age, birthdays but whether you are good enough and ready to move on.
