Discover the Secrets to Conquering Some of The Most Common Pitfalls You Face When Learning Ballet
Petit Battma or “beats”Hi, in my class I'm having a lot of trouble with beats. At the barre my teacher usually puts beats at the ankle in with frappes, and I can do those fine, but when we get to center and we're supposed to do assembles or petit jetes with a beat, I just...can't seem to do it. I know I need to jump high, point my feet and straighten my legs, but I still just can't seem to do them...any pointers? Thanks! Beats do not happen at the ankle. They happen at the upper thigh. Your inner thigh muscles have to initiate the crossing movement and pull your legs inward to accomplish the beat. You can practice beats by facing the barre, putting both hands on, and jump up, supporting yourself on the barre. You can then “hang” in the air and practice beating. There is also an exercise called “pour batterie” — literally, “for beats”. You stand facing the barre, tendu a la seconde, flex your foot and pull you leg into fifth front, fifth back, fifth front, fifth back, many many times, and gradually increasing your speed. You should be able to feel your inner upper thigh muscles working.
By the way, “petit battement” is how you spell the exercise in your heading, and refers to the barre exercise of the same name. Beats in the center of any description are correctly termed “batterie.”

I thought it was going to be some boring old post, but it really compensated for my time. I will post a link to this page on my blog. I am sure my visitors will find that very useful. You may need to take turns going around the group, or raising hands.

Focus on your plie- after all, it’s your source of energy! Bend into a nice plie, brush your leg, and beat as quickly as possible. Beat with your thighs, NOT your ankles!
