Pointe practise

Hi I have recently started on pointe and I have really nice pointe shoes and all. When I practise at home, I use my jazz sneakers (the ones with the same flat end as a pointe shoe) because I don’t want to ruin my pointe shoes. I don’t know if this is bad for you. They seem pretty supportive of my feet and ankles but I just want to make sure! Thanks

  1. um I don’t think its the best idea to be using anything other than pointe shoes to practise! they might be supportive but the reason they are called jazz boots is because they are used for jazz, not pointe work. Maybe wear a pair of socks over the outside of your pointe shoes to protect them. if your still not sure ask your teacher.

  2. you should only practise pointe in your pointe shoes. your jazz sneakers may be suportive, but they don’t give you the same range of motion as pointe shoes and balencing is compleatly different. if you don’t want to get your pointe shoes dirty, either clean the floor you are going to be practicing on or wear socks over your pointe shoes (none with a seam that goes over the tip though, as this will alter the platform you are standing on when you go on pointe). if you are worried about the surface of the floor damaging your shoes, then it’s probably not a safe floor to be practising on anyway. you should never try to do pointe on carpet or concrete, and most other floorings won’t damage your shoes, tile might damage your feet though if you are doing anything other than rising onto pointe by rolling through your feet slowly.

  4. When you first start out en pointe, you really shouldn’t be doing much without teacher supervision in the first place, because you could form bad habits. And, pointe shoes are for pointe, jazz shoes are for jazz, and there is a reason for that. Jazz shoes and pointe shoes and completely different, and you’ll develop completely different muscles with different dance shoes. Like others said, wear socks to keep them clean if you are worried about them getting dirty. But, I wouldn’t even worry about that, because well, they are shoes. They are going to get dirty because you wear them on your feet. They’ll get marks, they’ll get streaks, they’ll get dirt. There isn’t much you can do to avoid it.

    And, Saski, even NYCB principals don’t do pointe in bare feet. Standing on your toes isn’t pointe. It’s standing on your toes barefoot. I’ve got amazing feet, great arches and crazy strength, but if I go onto my toes without pointe shoes on, it isn’t pointe.

  5. You should buy a pair of long socks. Put them on over your pointe shoes and then pull the top back down over the shoe.
