Professional Ballet

Hi, I have recently become fascinated by the art of ballet and was wondering if I could become a professional ballerina or not.

I am 181cm tall (just over 5″11) and i’m almost certain that’s too tall…
I did jazz for two years (when I was 7 and 8) then stopped for two and started again when I was 11. I am 13 now so I have been doing jazz for the last two years.

I have never done ballet before but would like to learn and I would start taking lessons as soon as possible if I knew that I had a chance in the world of proffessional ballet.

Please give me your honest opinion.
Thank-you!

  1. It depends on how willing you are to fight to the end for what you want, when i went back to ballet i thought i wanted to go pro until last year when i decided i want to go to tafe instead and study. Gee you really are tall!!! but I don’t know about the height requirements, ring different companies and ask them what they think about your height. Your chances are getting smaller by the minute but it isn’t too late. good luck

  2. A very good saying is: if it is to be, then it is up to me, to make my dreams, a reality! Reach for the stars but also be prepared to take other paths! grasp what-ever opportunities present themselves to you with both hands! it is all a part of the wonderful and magical world of dance. If height is worrying you, by all means phone the companies, do your research and from that, take it from there. I too am a tall dancer of 5’11 – I could have gone on to be a contemporary dancer but my heart was with classical ballet. a path that came along my way was that of teaching classical ballet. i stepped onto that path and have not looked back since. i think teaching was truly my calling in hindsight. So aim for your dreams and aspirations but be prepared to take on other areas too. it all adds up to a wonderful curriculum vitae. good luck and i wish you all the very very best. Tracy xx

  3. No, 13 isn’t too old; I know a girl who started at 13, worked like crazy, is now 17 and was invited to study at the Munich Ballet School with hopes of getting into the company. She is pretty tall also. If you are talented, AND work very hard, you have a chance of succeeding. You don’t know until you try!!
