Discover the Secrets to Conquering Some of The Most Common Pitfalls You Face When Learning Ballet
Should I Lose Weight? So I’m about 5’4″ and i weigh about 120 lbs. My friend looks about my same weight, yet weighs 100 lbs. I have alot of muscle, which may make me weigh more than her, but i feel i still need to lose weight. Since we look the same (we are both pretty thin but not like extremely thin) If i lost 20 lbs do you think I might look very underweight (the lowest average is 108 for my height)? There are people who tell me I’m thin enough already, then there have been about 2 people in my life who have never thought I should lose some weight. I actually think I’m very nice looking from a side view, yet from the front I’m rather wide, and I have broad shoulders. I wear medium leotards, and some are to big but fit ok. Most people I know wear petites and they are the same size as me, which confuses me. February 11, 2007 | In Questions | 11 Comments11 Comments »RSS feed for comments on this post. Hi,
Ok I see your point why don’t you try walking every day for 40 minutes a day or maybe for supper or lunch try having a those diet foods like Night Hawks or Healthy Choice. I know it’s hard but maybe you should just stick to water for a while. I only have faty drinks on the third week of every month like on Friday. but try to not have pizza and chips and cream soda and all the junky food like that. Don’t go any lower than 108. Oh, one more thing you might want want to do is jumping jakes for a maybe thirty mintues a day but don’t do cruchs or push-ups cruchs are bad for your back if you don’t know how to do them the right way. push-ups are bad for dancing. If you want more little nid bits like this a can get them from a book call Dancing it was writen in the 80s so it might be kind of hard to find but if you want to learn more about it i can find the aruthers names and let you know.
Nancy,
P.S.
Sorry I know most of my spelling is wrong SORRY. But it’s like 10:00pm over here as in the U.S. I know that’s not late but…Never mind.
hope i helped

I’m not very good at recalculating numbers and I’m used tot the metric system (kilos and centimetres that is), so I don’t know if you SHOULD lose weight or not, but I do know that people can make themselves pretty miserable by comparing themselves to others. We seem to have a tendency to be much harder on ourselves than on others.
) please try to do it in a healthy way.
If you really think you should lose weight (health- or dancewise, not just mirror/clothesize-wise
And I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re still young (and growing etc), be careful with diet products. Don’t go doctoring yourself, but consult a nutritionist or physician for advice first.
(I know, I’m strong about this, but I had a sister of a friend of mine die because she used the wrong kind of diet products without proper guidance.)
Is much better to try and live as healthy as possible (healthy food, exercise, …) than to try and reach a certain number at the scales, or a certain size of clothes.
Try to like yourself and your own body, you can’t exchange it for your friend’s anyway and your bodies might never look the same or weigh the same.

Please don’t try to lose weight just because other people weigh less than you do. If you look good and feel good, that should be your measure. I agree completely with Kaat. And those diet foods like Healthy Choice are frequently loaded with sodium which is not good. Eat fresh foods, protein, vegetables, fruit, some carbs like brown rice.
Sorry Nancy, but jumping jacks for 30 minutes a day is possibly one of the worst ideas I have heard. They are turned in and not terribly good for the knees. If you want aerobic exercise, yes, walking is good, or get on an elliptical exercise machine (the kind that does not impact your knees). Also, the idea that push ups are not good for dancers is a little out of date (and they won’t make you lose weight, nor will crunches). Properly done, a push up engages your stomach, back and hip muscles, not only your arm muscles, and teaches you to use your core muscles instead of relying on your arms.

I guess the most important words here are “properly done”…
What goes for unsupervised dieting also goes for unsupervised exercise of course, please, only exercise in a way you know how to do it correctly.
And good luck if you do decide to work on your weight.

That’s why I wrote “properly done”!! I know from experience that frequently people (of all ages) think they just because they do something approximately, it’s done correctly — and that applies to all parts of life, not just dancing or exercise!!

I think from your discription that if you want to lose weight shooting for 100 would be too much. Iwould say lose five pounds and then re-evaluate. if you still want to, you might be okay going down t 110, but don’t go farther than that. and stop comparing yourself to your freind, because even if they look about the same size, each of you is built differently. your torsos are different lengths and your rib-cages and hips (and I mean the bone structure) are different widths. and I wear medium leotards and I’m only 5’3″ and weigh 105, so abviously it has to do with more just height and weight. and F.Y.I. leo sizes tend to be really close together and run small.

I don’t think you need to lose any weight. I you look fine and feel fine, then don’t let a number on the scale influence whether you will lose weight or not. Besides, if you look like your friends who weighs less than you but you still look the same as far as weight, then that probably just means you have more muscle than she does and that’s a good thing. I agree with zoe, push-ups are good for building core muscles when properly done. But you should do them to build up your muscle, not because you’re concerened about what a scale says.

The recommended weight for female ballet dancers is between 85 and 115lbs. Now you should weigh 114lbs, so you are definately ok now DON’T LOSE ANYMORE WEIGHT!!

LOL! sweetie, u weigh as much as i WANT to! thats exactly how much u should weigh. if this makes u want to be UNDER weight, then stop. i wouldnt compromise my health for dance. u can still enjoy dancing, but health expert recommend 100 for every 5 feet, and 5 pounds more for each inch. if u really would like to be ‘skinny winny’, eating right and actually having MUSCLE will help ur metabolism burn more calories. but, come come, now. HOW tall is ur little friend over there?
