If I were you I’d investigate Kaat’s idea. Europe is far more accepting of the notion of pursuing two such divergent things in your education. I looked at the website for the Conservatory you mention, and with all due respect, I was not inspired by the photos of dancers on it either technically or artistically. I know it is not necessarily the best way to judge a place, but as schools tend to put their best photos on their websites, if you love ballet I would really think twice and three times. Never go anywhere just because a friend is going there. It is a big mistake. Furthermore, if you want to leave Minnesota (an artistically-oriented friend of mine did and has never regretted it), going to a school in St. Paul is perhaps not the best way to do so!!
Royal Ballet of Flanders is a marvelous company. Germany also is full of dance and wonderful education. If you want to get out of Minnesota, you really should look into this. Grab every chance you can to broaden your horizons. Again, good luck.

I completely agree, and you do know i was talking about this school for my 14yearold friend who is looking to switch highschools. I agree with you on the picture and from what ive heard they arent that great.
I also completely agree with you about europe and will look into those colleges. Thanks again Zoe.

I’d be interested to hear what you finally decide on. It’s not very often one hears of combinations like this! If you think of it, put a post up after you’ve decided. Good luck again!

I most certainly will. It may be a couple of weeks but I will definetly post again when i have decided. Thank you for your help Zoe!

im 13 years old and live near saint paul and ive been debating whether or not i should go to spcpa. my friend form balleyt goes there and loves it and i went there one day to see what it was like [shadowing] im not sure if its the best dance school there is, but if your interested maybe in music, or theatre, you could do all three there. it was a very nice school though. i hope to hear yoru decision soon!

I’ve heard that it’s a great school.
Rachel: what’s shadowing?

Oh, I don’t know about a 14-year-old needing to be in a rush to leave Minnesota. Charles Askegard studied in Minneapolis until he was 16 or so, and it hasn’t seemed to have hindered his career.
SPCPA is not an audition-based school, non-dance major students are required to take dance in addition to their major area of study, and the pictures you see on the website were taken during its first year in existence (it’s only in its second year now). So you can’t judge the quality of its dance instruction by what you see in the photos. In fact, I’ve just looked at them and I recognize some of the students shown as being theatre, not dance, majors (full disclosure: I’m a parent of an SPCPA theatre student).
Their theatre program is top-notch, and I’m sure they’re aiming for the same with their dance program. I’d go check out it out before I dismissed it based on the website photos or hearsay.

I go to SPCPA and I am friends with many of the dancers there. They say the program is one of the best in the Twin Cities and it’s great that they can have time during the day to work on dance. The teachers are amazing. I, myself, am a theatre major and the program, as previously commented, is amazing. If your friend is really interested, she should try to shadow at the school.

yes, the dance track at spcpa has some of the best instructors in minnesota. I attended the school for musical theatre. the musical theatre also does alot of dance but you also have an acting class and repatior class. im sure your friend will fit right in because all the people there are like a big family. The onley fist figh that happened at the school was because some punk from another school came to st. paul to start a fight. not onley does spcpa have good balet. there dance track takes modern, tap (if you want), jazz, and acting. dont listen to people who researched it on the site, i went to spcpa. the lunch period is open so you can go to whatever resturant you want. And you get to go to school in a castel!!!
on fridays you can take elective arts classes, things like stage combat, all different forms of dance, acting classes, choir, music classes and more. the wilkins dance studio is where the dance classes take place. these studios are HUGE! and they have rubber floors…they are way nice! also in january you get a break from school called J-Term. it like what colleges do but you are required to participate in arts. the studnt body puts on plays, and recitals, and any number of different shows. and you get to audition in school for J-Term you dont have to go out looking for a production.
the school is overall amazing. but class starts at 8 am and is over at 3:50 pm. and if you live in the suburbs like me you leave at 7 and get back at 5 so its alot of school. but you dont have alot of homework because of the 1 1/2 hour study hall you get

SPCPA is a great school. I think it is very unfair for you to judge it based on pictures. The arts faculty are all working professionals in the field and hold a world of opportunities for young artists

My daughter started there the year it opened. It was magical. They do awesome productions. The pictures are not so great but they are from the first year of school too. They need updating.

SPCPA is really a unique school for driven high school students. Plus they have College in the Schools program which can allow a student to complete a big chunk of their college requirements before they head off to college. SPCPA recently upgraded their web site. There are much better photos on the site now. Check it out: http://www.spcpa.org. Great photos from all departments under the J-Term section: http://spcpa.org/conservatory/j-term/

I go to SPCPA and am in the dance track. I have been dancing since I was two and I absolutely love my school. We have some of the best teachers in the Twin Cities and the classes are fantastic. Going to another country is an amazing opportunity but so it going to this school. Also you can not judge the quality of our dancing from just a photo. We have a really talented group of kids in my track. the choice is yours!

I myself personally attend SPCPA and I not impressed with the dance track. The ballet is really laking and many of the students don’t have respect for the teachers. If I were you I would take the opportunity and go to Germany!

I go to SPCPA and although I am in the theatre track on Fridays I do take dance classes. I can personally say that my dance teachers are amazing, working professionals in the Twin Cities. Also I just switched to this school this year and I can honestly say it was the best choice of my life!
