Too Old For Ballet?

I’m 26 years old and have recently returned to ballet alter 4 years of very little dancing. Prior to that I took ballet, very intensely, from 6 to about 18 years old, then less intensely while in college (although I did dance professionally while in college… in Disney) I miss ballet terribly and it’s still a passion I’d like to pursue professionally.

I’m back to taking class everyday, including pointe and have regained my abilities faster than I expected. Many of my teachers don’t even believe I stopped for as long as I did because they can’t tell. My question is…. Is it realistic to think I can enter the very “young” world of ballet at this age? I’m thinking about auditioning for a summer program, but half of them don’t allow dancers over 23 to audition! In the real world I don’t feel old, but in the ballet world… well, that’s a different story.

Sincerely,
The “old” Anonymous :-)

  1. Dear “Old” Anonymous,

Congrats for wanting to again be a part of the world of dance!
I have good news a bad news. The bad news is: it’s very unrealistic to become a professional dancer after a certain age. However, might I say it’s NEVER too late to take ballet again! If you want to dance again, go out and find a good studio with adult classes (and if you want to go en pointe, you could always join the younger girls or request private lessons), and dance away! And since it seems you’re still fairly limber from all that earlier dancing, starting up again should be no problem!

    Dance on, and good luck,
    Meredith

  2. I believe you’re never too old as long as you have had a good training at a young age. I trained at the Urdang Academy in the eighties, I’m now 42 and although I don’t dance professionally anymore I still do class and believe my dancing is still at a decent level. Like yourself, I have had long absences from dancing.
