Discover the Secrets to Conquering Some of The Most Common Pitfalls You Face When Learning Ballet
Vaganova SchoolsHi, I’m looking for a summer program that teaches the Vaganova tradition. I know of the Kirov and B.I.M and Bossov. Does any body know of any other schools that teach Vaganova? Does any body know about the Bossov? I want to learn more about it. Is it a good summer program? Thanks 13 Comments »RSS feed for comments on this post. TrackBack URI Leave a comment |

Bossov is excellent. Depends what part of the country you want to be in. Get a copy of Dance Magazine and start looking for Vaganova/Russian academies, there are many. If you post where you want to go, I can give you a better idea.

Hi, Pula again,
Where I’d want to go is maybe Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Hampshire, California, or New Mexico. I know that’s a lot but at least I narrowed it down for you. Have you been to the Bossov? If you have, I would love to know more about it. Since they say one of the teachers teaches you pointe his way, I don’t want to get messed up with two kinds of pointe training. So, if you or someone else happened to go to that school, could you please tell me something about the school?
Thanks
Pula

@ Pula
I take it Europe is a bit far away for you to make a trip over summer?

I am not sure what you mean by teaching pointe “his” way as opposed to…which other way? As he teaches Vaganova I would assume he teaches Russian technique for pointe as well, don’t see anything amiss with Russian ballerinas’ pointe work!! Not sure who “they” are who told you he teaches “his” way, seems like a pretty unreliable comment. At any rate: besides the Kirov Academy in Washington DC, there is also Vladimir Issaev in Florida; Colorado Ballet in Denver; and Marat Daukayev in Los Angeles, all excellent schools. Good luck.

Hmm, just tried to post and didn’t succeed, will try again. First, who told you Bossov teaches pointe “his” way? If Bossov teaches Vaganova then he teaches Russian technique in all areas. I don’t see anything amiss with Russian ballerinas’ pointe work!! Whoever “they” are who told you that, I would ignore it, sounds like a pretty baseless comment. Besides Bossov and the Kirov Academy in Washington DC, there are the following: Vladimir Issaev in Florida; Marat Daukayev in Los Angeles; Colorado Ballet in Denver, all highly reputable schools that produce excellent results. Good luck!!

First, I am curious about who says Bossov teaches pointe “his” way? It seems like a rather baseless comment — Vaganova teachers teach the uniform Vaganova/Russian technique and do not ordinarily reinvent the wheel. I wouldn’t be worried about it — I don’t see anything amiss with pointe work performed by Russian ballerinas!
As for schools: besides Bossov and the Kirov Academy in Washington DC, there is: Vladimir Issaev in Florida; Marat Daukayev in Los Angeles, and the Colorado Ballet program in Denver. All very fine schools, that produce excellent results. Good luck!

Does any body know of any Vaganova schools in Texas?
Thanks

There is one run by Peggy Willis-Aarnio, I think it’s the Willis Ballet, maybe run out of Texas Tech. There is also a good school in South Carolina, Governor’s School for the Arts, with an excellent Vaganova program there.

Have heard some not such good reports about this one (russianballet.net). If you study the videos of the web page, the feet are not pointed in the air and the girls look earthbound, not light. Decent pirouettes, but that’s not the be all and end of dancing and/or technique.

Yeah, after I watched one of the videos I was shocked, there pirouettes were stiff and there pirouettes went all over the stage. And yes there toes were not pointed.

Does anybody know much about the Bossov?

There is a fantastic school in Hackettstown, NJ…. My daughter has attended many well-known summer intensives…the NJ school’s Vaganova Workshop is a fabulous program! The classes are small and they get really individualized attention.
Luba Guyealva is the ballet mistress of the program… and she is the best! The students are worked hard and learn a lot. The cost is very reasonable and they offer “host” family housing at a family low cost. The program is 2 weeks.
you can visit the website at… njsda.org
My daughter fully believes that she was able to be accepted in other large programs, because of her instruction at The New Jersey State Vaganova Workshop in Hackettstown New Jersey.
