When do you know you’re ready for pointe?

I’ve been doing ballet since last September, 11 months. I’ve been doing a lot of work on my bad arches and I’ve been working on strengthening my ankles.

How good of an arch do you have to have to be on pointe? And how do you know when your ankle is the strongest?

  1. Remember that although not every dancer will be successful on pointe, there are shoes these days for a very large range of feet. Your teacher may tell you that your ankles and feet are strong enough, but also ask about legs, upper body, and the mental sharpness dancers gain over the years…pointe is more complicated than rolling up and down, so be determined, learn as much as possible, and show ‘em that there’s no such thing as bad feet!

  2. No none is ready for pointe after only 11 months of ballet. It takes years of training to go on pointe. If you do it to soon you will get frustrated and potentially injured and develop knee problems foot problems etc. Be patient, talk to your teacher for advice on areas you need to improve. Keep working on your arches(resist-a bands-, picking up coins and rolling up towels with your toes.

  3. 11 months? To be frank not many people can go on pointe after 11 months… sometimes not even after 2 years… [this is NOT to discourage you]

What I’m saying is that before you go on pointes you should be sure that you have mastered the basic ballet steps. When you are stronger, pointes will be less challenging and more enjoyable.
