  2. Can you apply for a college but take a year’s deferment and audition for some companies, if you are thinking of a possible career in dance? If you love dancing it would be a shame to at least not try right now to get some experience. If you do a deferred enrollment you know you have a place in a college of your choice; but if you spend four years in college and then try to get into a company, you will be four years older and competing with 18 year olds to get in.

    UC Irvine in California or SUNY Purchase are both good. But — if you want a serious career in a company, don’t wait, at least give the audition circuit a try. While it is certainly not a hard and fast rule that ballet dancers who go to college don’t get into companies, those four years can make a big difference.

  5. @ Zoe: I don’t know about the situation in the US, but I get from you post that the situation is worse than in Europe?
    I’m from Belgium (Flandres) and I hear a LOT of complaints from people over here also… So if the situation over there is even worse, that must be really bad?
    (Or people here don’t know how lucky they are?) ;-)

    My friend’s sister is in a similar situation and her family suggested that she went to a college with a good dance program while majoring in something else. So that after college if anything happened, my friend’s sister would have a backup career to fall back on if dancing did not work out. Have a nice day! =)

  8. try ODU in VA(really good dance team&company), HPU in Hawaii(good dance team), NC school of the arts, Sweet Briar in VA, Point Park University, and University of the Arts. :) good luck. those 30 1/2 hours will look really good.
