Discover the Secrets to Conquering Some of The Most Common Pitfalls You Face When Learning Ballet
Who are you and where are the late starters?Hi guys, I noticed 3 things lately: 1) there are more and more people finding their way to the website 2) there are quite a few late starters out there 3) there are only 3 posts in the “members” section… Wouldn’t it be nice to know who we’re talking to (I know I’d like this), especially for the people who post regularly? Greetings to all, Kaat February 13, 2007 | In Questions |324 Comments »RSS feed for comments on this post. TrackBack URI Leave a comment |

Yeah, you right. It seems a little fishy that there are ALOT of late starters. But I’m not to judge.
Comment by Nancy — February 14, 2007 #
What do you mean by ‘fishy’? :-/ (feeling dumb)
Comment by Kaat_E — February 14, 2007 #
Well in other words it seems a little odd that almost every body on here is starting late.
Sorry that didn’t make any sense.
Comment by Nancy — February 14, 2007 #
Hey!
I’m sure late. I’m seventeen, but i’m so in love with the dance and i’ve gotten pretty good in the last 3 months. I’m alittle scared to join a bigger program because I’m so far behind, but ballet is my world —- even if I am new.
Comment by Jana — February 16, 2007 #
I don’t think it’s a matter of it being fishy… I think it’s got to do with the fact that more and more people are turning to ballet as a form of exercise since they’re getting tired of aerobics and yoga.
Comment by Joie — February 17, 2007 #
Well i started when I was a little girl, but I stopped at the age of 10. I am planning on dancing again because ballet is a big part of my life and I dont want to give up. As I can see, I guess its never to late to start over.
Comment by Eseni E. — February 18, 2007 #
well .. i’m not a late starter
.. I started when i was 5 .. and now i’m 14 (I am also possible the yongest person on this website) I am at the victorian college of the arts secondary school studying dance. And i’m loving ballet! I do 20 + hours aweek. and yeah .. anything else u wanna know?
Comment by Dylan — February 19, 2007 #
Have you ever heard about somebody starting ballet at 25? Well, that’s me. I love it and I regret that my parents did not encorage me to take ballet lessons when I was a little girl although I was doing “pirouettes” around the house and I knew what “pointes” were…. I do not know how far can I get, but my dream is to be able to dance on pointes someday - i hope you won’t consider it unrealisthic. Sometimes I’m sad because this passion will not get me anywhere, but I it has won me and I cannot give up.
Comment by grandma :) — February 19, 2007 #
LOL! I gotcha trumped, Granma! I started when I was 33:) Still doing it and still loving it!(3years later:) Oh and by the way, We WILL ge to point some day:))! (Thats my goal, too:)
Remember, dancing is not for anyone else except ourselves:)
Comment by Marie — February 20, 2007 #
Ok, Marie, you win.
I started at 28…
At my school there’s a lady who started at 30 (she’s now in her 40s and she made it on pointe, so it is possible, or so it seems).
Comment by Kaat — February 21, 2007 #
Thanks so much for your comments, Kaat and Marie! It’s really encouraging for me to know i don’t have an impossible dream :)… I wish you all the best.
Comment by grandma :) — February 21, 2007 #
I think I the yongest person on the website because i’m 13.
Comment by Nancy — February 22, 2007 #
hay
any advice for starting late and trying to place in a class? are there classes for us? i do ballet because i love it, not to exersice. i bellydance to exercise
Comment by Jana — February 22, 2007 #
Hi Jana,
What do you mean by ‘trying to place in a class’?
Some schools have special classes for adult beginners or specific placement classes, well my school does, anyway.
Comment by Kaat — February 22, 2007 #
I started at 17 as well (I’m 19 now)… I’m glad to know that someone thinks it’s weird that’s there’s alot of late starters… it’s really comforting to me… because I feel like I’m not the only one. I’m always afraid of people’s reactions, ESPECIALLY those who have danced since they were 3. I never tell anyone I dance because I feel like they judge me or something. I just love dancing and I’m not planning on stopping anytime soon.
Comment by Mallory — February 22, 2007 #
I’m not a late starter either (age 6) but I think it’s great that there are so many out here. Ballet is about having fun, and I love that there are so many people who realize that, at any age. Don’t give up guys!!!!!
-Elizabeth
P.S. Sorry Nancy, you’re not the youngest. I’m 12.
Comment by Elizabeth — February 22, 2007 #
I did ballet as a child, took it up again at the age of 36, stopped again when i was 40 and am now studying quite intensively for a eaching qualification with the RAD. Just recently started pointe wrk. Having trouble getting up on pointe, but I want to master it, so i will.
People’s reactions vary - especially if they are from the ballet teaching world. Some are very encouraging, some incredibley supercilious. I’m just getting different things from different classes that I need, and will stay with the encouraging teachers after I am qualified. Good luck to all you ‘oldies’.
Comment by Fiona Jane Weston — February 23, 2007 #
hi im holly and im fourteen i only started ballet in september but im obsessed im not very good with the terminology but i seem to manage fine in class and don’t have major techinal issues i love ballet and nothing will stop me from going and enjoying my self in fact i love being corrected because it makes me feel asthough im going for a reason !!!
Comment by holly — February 23, 2007 #

Comment by Dylan — February 25, 2007 #
Am i the only Guy on this?? lol, i just relised
Comment by Dylan — February 27, 2007 #
Hi Fiona Jane,
How long have you danced as a child?
Or how long have you danced addind everything?
I think it’s great that you’re working towards qualification… What do you want to achieve finally?
What’s your dream?
Comment by Kaat — March 1, 2007 #
Hi kaat
oh good, they have classes for us out there. I’m starting a second school. Now I’m just worried about tuition and of course fitting in my jobs. Why are there so few of you guys Dylan?
Have ya’ll ever “balleted” to hip hop or pop music? of course andrea bocelli is great, but am I weird for finding harmony in today’s music?
Comment by Jana — March 2, 2007 #
I have no clue why there are so few guys on this website! .. at my school there are heps! Maybe they dont use the internet! lol
Comment by Dylan — March 2, 2007 #
in general, at least in the US, there are fewer males than females that do ballet. at the studio my sisters dance at there aren’t any, and there is probably at least 150 girls. I know lots of dads who won’t let their sons take ballet because it ian’t “manly.” I personaly have been trying to change minds on this subject for years.
Comment by Marissa — March 2, 2007 #
At my ballet school theres only two guys.
Comment by Nancy — March 2, 2007 #
I know why it is looked upon as “un-manly”, but it is manly! their job is to show of the girl. we need you guys!!
There really are very few “ballarin’er’s”. More power to you Dylan. so what are you guys called? Guess what, I’m starting another class! I’m 17, and I’ll be dancing with 12 year olds who are way better than me, but who cares!
I recomend some music : The String Quartet playing Coldplays greatest’s. Yellow!!, windows, shiver and everythings not lost are the most brillant pieces of music and amazing to dance with. please download them!!!
Comment by Jana — March 3, 2007 #
TELL ME ABOUT IT!! I mean we get to look at girls in leotarts!!! lol. At school we call ourselfs Ballareaos. hehe. But yeah! I told somone the other day that i do ballet and they said “Arnt all ballet dancers (that are boys) gay?” And i said hell no!! It really pisses me off!!!! Yeah, there are way more girls that do ballet. But thats whats so great about it!! Less competition!!!! lol
Comment by Dylan — March 3, 2007 #
Hey dylan
but yeah, alot of girl competiton out there. luckily I don’t have to deal with that yet. I KNOW everyone is better than me right now. ballareaos, huh? - nice. so how long have you been a ballareao?
No — the half naked girls is what’s great about it, you mean?
Comment by Jana — March 4, 2007 #
hehe, its funny because its true! lol. I’ve been dancing since i was 5. or somthing around that! lol.. and still loving it
god bless ballet!! lol
Comment by Dylan — March 5, 2007 #
Dylan: what the name of that move when you like jump up into the air and turn your body and then your legs do like a criss cross thing. what the name of that? if that made any sense. :]
Comment by Nancy — March 6, 2007 #
Hey guys! I’m new on here… I’m 17 and I just started dancing ballet.. I have actually been wanting to do it since I was a lil kid, but I didn’t have the chance to do it till now, and i’m loving it. Any advice on wheter I could make it to a company or do I need a Miracle for that?
Comment by Gena — March 6, 2007 #
I think Nancy your talking about a Grande Jete un turn on .. lol, Not sure if thats how u spell it though!! lol
Comment by Dylan — March 6, 2007 #
Hi Gena
I’m 17 and just starting now, too! I. LOVE. THE. BARRE. That has really helped me.
I have to join little girl classes and private lessons because no one will take me. But I’m also on the accerlerated path. 3 months — and i’m almost on my toes! a company…..it could happen
Comment by Jana — March 6, 2007 #
hey dylan
so how does one decide at 5 to do ballet?
Comment by Jana — March 6, 2007 #
Jana
I sarted ballet when I was five and I remember very clearly that I was the one who made the decision. I fell in love with ballet when my mom took me to the Nutcracker before I was even three. most kids do know their own mind by that age.
Comment by Marissa — March 6, 2007 #
Hi Everyone,
I just found this website and its very exciting to read of so many latecomers like myself.
I just started ballet two weeks ago at 27 years old. I did it when I was about five, and quit when they wanted to move me to the next level (I was too scared to go on stage). I wish my mum had perservered with me, I have regretted it my whole life.
Anyway, I am loving it now and although I know it can’t be a career path anymore, I am going to do the best that I can.
Glad to see so many of us out there!
Comment by Skye — March 7, 2007 #
My sister did Ballet and all that so when i went to the concet and saw this boy dance, i decided that i wanted to do it. But i was never really serious about it untill a few yrs ago. I also remeber my first concet!! I threw up when i was getting my tap plates for the first time. hehe
Comment by Dylan — March 7, 2007 #
@ Dylan: spelling: grand jeté en tournant maybe? (meaning: big leap (or throw, more accurately) while turning?).
I’m from Flandres, so French is only my second language. Are there French native-speakers here to correct us?
Comment by Kaat — March 7, 2007 #
Yeah, grand jeté en tournant is the right spellng! I just checked
Comment by Dylan — March 7, 2007 #
Hey Jana… I guess we are both on the same path. I’m taking little girl classes to and it’s been great. I will be taking private lessons next week and will be going on the accelerated path too. Thanks for the incouragement, and much luck to you!
Comment by Gena — March 7, 2007 #

Comment by Nancy — March 8, 2007 #
I agree with Nancy, I would like to know a little more about the people I “talk” to almost everyday.
Comment by Marissa — March 8, 2007 #
A member eh? .. how do u do that??
Comment by Dylan — March 8, 2007 #
Yeah I think that would be a great idea Nance…
Comment by Gena — March 8, 2007 #
Since I started the topic, I guess it’s obvious that I’d like people to introduce themselves.
So I suggest you write a little piece about yourself and e-mail it to Anita, with a picture if you have it. Send it to anita@balletinfo.com and she’ll put it in the members section. (Or that’s how I got on, anyway.)
Comment by Kaat — March 8, 2007 #
If you want to know a little more about it on this website theres a question that say, How do i become a site expert, So hope by the end of this month we may have some more site members. : )

Comment by Nancy — March 9, 2007 #
just a thought since we are talking about getting to know each other better, could everyone PLEASE sign their name when they post a question? it doesn’t do it automaticaly like when you make a comment, and on some topics it makes a huge difference who is asking the question.
Comment by Marissa — March 9, 2007 #
You wanna be an actor hey Jana?? ME TO! But i also wanna do ballet! So i want to be a pro dancer but a pro actor as well .. is that possible?? Mikhail Baryshnikov did it .. So why cant i? Does anyone else know who has done that? .. and who else on this website wants to do that?? ..
Comment by Dylan — March 9, 2007 #
Hey dylan,
you can be in the ’step up’ sequel. you know, dance in a movie. but i’m super serious. i’m going to be an actor. I’m like going out there when i’m 18 (or 19—whenever i have saved enough money) and auditioning there because my agent doesnt do crap for me here, except modeling gigs. I’m going to keep dancing though. I’ll keep ballet with me my entire life. but that’s cool to have two things.
see ya in the movies!

Comment by geane — March 10, 2007 #
That’s not late you know Geane.
Comment by Nancy — March 10, 2007 #
Hey Dylan
I don’t think I can be a pro dancer. I started dancing in march of ‘06, so by the time i’m good enough no one will hire my old self. I could do some belly dance work, though. I’m pretty good at that. so pro actor, definantly, to answer your question.
Comment by Jana — March 11, 2007 #
Hey Geane,
it sure can feel late cant it. I’m so jealous of all those “i’ve been dancing since i was 3″ girls. I’ve been ballet-ing for 3 months. hang in there

Punkrockdancer????
Comment by Dylan — March 13, 2007 #
Hi,
@ Jana: I speak Dutch (well, Flemish), which is more or less the same as in Holland.
I’ve had French at school for 8 years and English for 6.
French should be my 2nd language and English my 3rd, but since I use English more often than French, I feel more comfortable talking English than French.
Should do something about that…
Someday…
Taking up ballet, I found my passive knowledge of French still existing, though, and it helps.
I think in Dutch, but when I went to Canada for a course I found myself thinking in English after a day or so.
A small percentage of Belgians speaks German, but I don’t, never studied it.
Did follow Latin at school, but that’s pretty dead.
@ Nancy: well, “Nobody ” is either a very secure or a very insecure person. You know: Nobody’s perfect, I’m nobody, so I must be perfect.
Comment by Kaat — March 13, 2007 #
Yeah I get your point Kaat, I’m just saying the they could at least put a name like Margaret or something.
Dylan: there is a person on this website that has the name Punkrockdancer.
Comment by Nancy — March 13, 2007 #
Do you type these directly in English or translated them? say no, because you type better english than me, and it’s my first language
Comment by Jana — March 14, 2007 #
where is everyone else from? i’m in Georgia. I don’t like it. I’m not a southern hick like my nieghbors. (this is paint ball, huntin’ county). I want to go back to texas
Comment by Jana — March 14, 2007 #
hey everybody! i’m a real live member now! put ya’lls pictures up too!
Comment by Jana — March 14, 2007 #
okay. that comment was a bit “hick-ish” i’ll admit. lol
Comment by Jana — March 14, 2007 #
Hey, you lived in Texas? I live in Texas I HATE it.
Comment by Nancy — March 14, 2007 #
@Jana: I’m sorry
but no, I don’t translate, I type in English directly.
But I guess it’s an age thing. I work at a school and the teachers here complain students can’t spell anymore. Educational scientists think it’s because us oldies have learned to write by hand and only later started to use the computer and we didn’t have chat or SMS or things like that.
Now we see students using chat/SMS-type spelling in formal texts also, because they’re so used to it, it goes automatically.
(Which is not to say I’m “old”, but 10 years makes a difference, I guess.)
It reminds me of a time where I used to write letters to my friends in mirror-script (practice, practice) and then we had a test for Dutch and I almost wrote it in mirror-script also. The look on my teacher’s face was awesome.
Comment by Kaat — March 14, 2007 #
hey kaat
That’s cool. so you’re an oldy, huh? 28 isn’t old. especially for a guy. you never answered my question a while ago. what language do you think in? you see, i’m very interested in psychology too. I always have to ask that. I love the responses I get.
Comment by Jana — March 14, 2007 #

Comment by Nancy — March 15, 2007 #
Thanks Nancy.
Just did it so hopefully should be a member soon
Comment by Skye — March 15, 2007 #
@ Skye: don’t worry if your profile doesn’t show up right away, it can take a while.
@ Jana and Kaat: part of the problem with our generation’s spelling problems comes from the fact that schools were experimenting with different methods of teaching reading when we were kids. also, most of us started using spellcheck at a young age, so there was nothing to force us to learn how to spell.
Comment by Marissa — March 15, 2007 #
Since we’re on the subject of spelling anyway…
It’s anita@balletinfo.com, not Anite, Nancy!

Comment by Nancy — March 16, 2007 #
The war everywere!!! lol, .. anywho, I’m seeing Don Q tonight!! So meag excited! and then i might be doing a course at the Aus Ballet!!!!! EEEE!!!! Cant wait!
Comment by Dylan — March 16, 2007 #
The war in a nutshell kaat (and anyone else interested) The war is in Iraq. the US promised we would bring them government. the people with no freedom or homes say yay! and the people with big guns say nay! if we leave, they will get angry and bomb us. If we stay, they will get angry and bomb us. Americans want out — So of course president bush sent a few thousand more troops over. This war is really pissing us off. We did a play about it last semester. real life plays can be so fun.
dylan - that’s cool! have fun!
Comment by Jana — March 16, 2007 #
Hi guys,
Please, try to keep track of who is saying what in a discussion…
So Nancy: I wasn’t talking about any war yet!
And Jana: appology accepted, LOL.
All: about the war…
Well, actually, lots of people in Europe wonder why the US ar so concerned about Iraq.
Is it for humanitary reasons, or are there other incentives involved (money? oil? other?).
Anyway, on a personal score: I do not believe war is a solution for anything, nor agression in any form…
Comment by Kaat — March 17, 2007 #
@ Kaat: a lot of us over here are wondering the same thing. obviously our president’s origanal excuse of weapons of mass destruction no longer holds up. the truth is, president Bush is very secrative, and no one knows what his true motavation is. personaly I don’t think our origanal attack was justified, and war doesn’t fix anything.
Comment by Marissa — March 17, 2007 #
Make Ballet, not war!
Comment by Dylan — March 17, 2007 #
What do you Dylan?
Yall let’s not talk about war since this is a ballet site.

Comment by Dylan — March 18, 2007 #
Sorry Dylan I forgot a word. What do you mean when you said “Make Ballet, not war”?
Comment by Nancy — March 18, 2007 #

war is a very important part of civilization — so are politics. i just had a quick question of ya’ll’s (especially the ones who aren’t american) opinion. so sorry i “strayed”.
But i agree — ballet is more fun. so how long did it take ya’ll to stand on your toes? - those who can

not neccessarily a pointe dancer — just to stand on your toes. oh, I can’t get my comment to stay on my other page - but to go ahead and answer your question: i’ve been belly dancing since march ‘06. many thanks to my mentor and best friend, sophia, and shakira of course.

So does any body know anything about the Bossov and some tips on what i sould be prepared for?
Comment by Nancy — March 20, 2007 #
Hey guys,
I’m still a member, but I’m not showing as site expert anymore.
Don’t know how to explain this, because I still am, as far as I know.
BTW, there’s a difference between member and expert I guess, but Anita asked me if she could put my name up with the experts.
I don’t consider myself an expert, so I don’t mind not being on the expert section, and I’m still member, so why bother.
Yesterday we got the program for our summer intensive (it’s a 1 week program), didn’t read it completely, but will get back to it in a few days… All work and no play at the moment…

Nancy: if nobody has answered your questio, it’s posible that nobody has anything to tell you. all I can tell you is general to all summer internsives. make sure you have a water bottle, an extra pair of slippers, at least one extra pair of point shoes (it depends on how long you will be there and how fast you normally go through them, but be prepared to go through them faster than usual), toe tape, band aids, anything else you might need to take care of your feet, an ace bandage in case of injury, multivitamins in case the food isn’t as nutritional as it could be, a sewing kit, and lots of hair stuff. the only other thing I can say is be prepared to work hard and have fun.

Incase youre interested Jana, I go camping alot and where we camp, there are hundreds of kangaroos just hopping around right near our tent. This is normal for me, but I thought it may interest you.
When I was in primary school, I had a penpal in America and they asked if we rode kangaroos to school! LOL.

I love all sorts of childrens fantasy books (even though Im 27). The Narnia Chronicles are my fave. Nancy, if you read this before my other post, you need to register to get onto the forum. There is a register button at the top of the screen to create your username and password.
Comment by Skye — March 27, 2007 #
I’m with Skye, I mostly read childrens fantasy. I also like sci-fi, historical fiction, and childrens classics. I’ll pretty much read anything though. the only problem is, I don’t have very much free time right now, so I don’t get a chance to read very much.
Comment by Marissa — March 27, 2007 #
Wow… I’m behind…
Books:
I read almost everything, but Harry Potter is nice too.
I read English and Dutch, btw.
G2g, busy at work.

Comment by Kaat — March 28, 2007 #
Well Nancy, have you ever read harry potter? the 4th book is the most amazing thing on this planet. (the ipod and google follow that) - hehe. I can only read children’s books. i can’t read “big people” books. catcher in the rye is my runner up for favorite book. it’s wierd, but I relate to Holden ALOT.
where do you work kaat? even though you might already told us… lol. you’re studying psycology, right? Well speaking of ballet, i was making up a class in the little girl group. i am facinated by children psycology, so that was super fun and i observed alot.
Comment by Jana — March 29, 2007 #
hey again,

Hey everyone, come and start chatting in the forum!
Comment by Skye — March 29, 2007 #
Skye: I can’t because I can’t send the form thing that was sent to me that my parents are to posted to fill out.
Jana: No I have not read Harry Potter. I have heard that there’s is a alot of black magic in it.
And also my Parents don’t aprove of it because they don’t like the way it sounds.
Does anybody on this site love to read about World War 2? I LOVE to read about World War 2 that my sound mean becasuse all the people that died but I still like to read about.
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
Nancy: there is no more dark magic in Harry Potter than in Lord of the Rings. and all of it is done by the bad guys. I think they have a bad rap because people think of the as childrens books, and they are really meant for teenagers. maybe your parents should read the books before deciding they are bad.
Comment by Marissa — March 29, 2007 #
I agree with Marissa on Potter. And they are fiction and do not claim to be anything else.
Nancy, have your read the Anne Frank diary?
I was always very interested in WW2 also, mainly because my grandfather was captured by the Germans (and escaped, else I wouldn’t exist) and also one of my classmates grandmother survived the concentration camps.
Jana: I graduated in clinical psychology (family and developmental orientation) in 2002. I got a teachers degree afterwards and also did a one year course on animal assisted intervantions and one on experiential work with children after.
I’m now working as a family counselor in special youth services and as a student counselor in a college.
I’m now deciding on a therapy course or to study history.
I’m a sponge. I like to learn.
Why can’t you read adult books?
And Catcher in the Rye’s great.
Comment by Kaat — March 29, 2007 #
Its great that you respect your parents decision on the Harry Potter books Nancy. My family felt the same way as we are very Christian and my sister in law refuses to read the books. However, I read a few to form my own opinion, and I must admit I am surprised that you are allowed to read lord of the rings and not harry potter. The magical concepts are very similar.
I think that as long as you are old enough to read them responsibly, and realise that they are fiction and that evil is not something to aspire to, then its fine. I can understand the problem when people think they are for younger children. Only a parent can decide how their child will react to certain themes I guess. I really didnt feel they were as bad as the public has made them sound though, and I quite enjoyed them.
Comment by Skye — March 29, 2007 #
Kaat: Yes I have read the diary of Anne Frank. when you said your grandfather was captured by the germans did he get taken to a concentration? If so which one? And are there any books you know of that would be good to read. I can read adult books.
Skye, Kaat and Marissa: In Lord of the Rings people don’t fly around on broom sticks or something like that, that is what i saw in previews to a movie. And we are also a VERY strong Christian family to so parents don’t want me to read a book that may or may not have things in it that well make me change my on mind God.
Where is everybody on this site the only people that have written stuff on this site in the last week are like Kaat, Skye, Marissa and of course me.
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
@ Nancy:
I’ve read Potter and I don’t think there is anything in it that would change your opinion on religion in one way or the other.
The broomsticks aren’t referring to witches or anything, if that’s what your parents are concerned about.
Anyway, no, my granddad wasn’t taken to a concentration camp, but was summoned to work for the Germans and had to go to a collecting place (Belgium didn’t have a destruction camp, but did have work camps), but he fled, obviously.
I never knew the details and he passed away two years ago, so he can’t tell me anymore.
Books:
I liked the story of Eva Schloss, but I don’t know if it is available in English, I read it in Dutch.
Comment by Kaat — March 29, 2007 #
Nancy: the flying on broomsticks is in the context of a game, kind of a cross between basketball and soccer except in the air. and there is nothing in the books about god one way or the other, except them celebrating Christmas. I really don’t see why people think they are a threat to their religion. they aren’t supposed to be anything other than a figment of the author’s imagination. I really think that people should actually read the books before deciding they are bad. even my pastor has read them and thinks they are great books. and if a book can change someone’s beleif in God, then that person didn’t believe very strongly in the first place. I really don’t understand why people think the Harry Potter books are so bad and yet are okay with other fantasy books.
I like reading about WWII also. both my grandfathers served in the US Navy, but I think they were both in the South Pacific the entire time. I’ve read the diary of Anne Frank too. a great WWII book written for older kids and young adults is Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. its about a girl whose best freind is Jewish.
Comment by Marissa — March 29, 2007 #
Thanks for the books all be sure to read them.
Yall sorry but i think it’s hopeless for you change my mind on Harry Potter.
Does anybody know of a really good ballet movies? I’ve seen Children on Theatre Street and The Turning Pointe. Are there any other ballet movies out there that are good. Turning Pointe I wish i had not seen because i didn’t know that there was stuff in it. So I can’t see movies like that so please if there are any movies please make them be PG or PG13.
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
Sorry forgot they can be G too.
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
Center Stage is PG13. the acting isn’t great, but the dancing is. you might also try looking for movies of different ballets, the Nutcracker is easy to find, there are others, but they aren’t as easy to find.
Comment by Marissa — March 29, 2007 #
Center Stage do you know why it’s rated PG13?
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
Nancy,
Jumping back in the conversation a bit, did you mean you are waiting for your parents to sign a form for the forum, or you cant get the form signed for the forum?
Also, I think centre stage may have a few ‘teenage’ themes in it, like boy-likes-girl sort of stuff. If I am thinking of the right movie, there is also a bit in it when they are dancing in a show where it is a bit of a flirty, suggestive dance, made to look like they are going to bed together but it is actually part of the dance.
Correct me if Im wrong people, I may be thinking of a different movie.
Comment by Skye — March 29, 2007 #
Me again!
Nancy, have you ever read the Narnia Chronicles? The author was a dedicated Christian, in fact the majority of his works were not childrens fiction but religious books.
The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe is loosely based on the story of Jesus. (The new movie has made it something more gory and more for older people though). Ive read these books about 10 times since I was 8 years old, and I just love them. I know its not WW2, but hey, since they are my favourite I just cant see how anyone could NOT like them!
Comment by Skye — March 29, 2007 #
Skye: I love the Narina series and yeah the movie is kind of gory.
The forum my parents can’t fill it out because we can’t send it threw email.
Thanks for giving me a short review of Center Stage.
Comment by Nancy — March 29, 2007 #
yah Skye, thats the right movie, its also got some language. the nice thing about watching movies on video is you can always fast-forward through the stuff you don’t want to see. Oh and I’d like to point out that the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe takes place during WWII, the whole reason the kids are being sent away is to escape the bombs being dropped on London.
Anybody read the Shoes books by Noel Streatfeild? most of them have the word Shoes in the title in the US, but have other titles other places they were printed. I like Ballet Shoes the best, it’s also a movie. It’s rated either PG or G.
Comment by Marissa — March 30, 2007 #
sorry I’ve been gone. interesting conversation.
About Potter, it is fanatasy. I think it scares people because it is so popular and directed at tweens. It is cute, friendly, imaginitive, adventurous and the good guy always wins. I was slow to finally pick one up to, but those books became so personal to me. The characters are so well written, I them as my friends. alot of books can do that - like catcher in the rye. They also say nothing about religion, except a christmas. oh, and some lady last year tried to remove them from schools. I protested on the hearing and landed in the paper (on accident - i didnt make a scene). i was also on the front page at the harry potter party. how ironic, twice for the same thing. I can read ‘grown up’ books, I just can’t get through the 2nd chapter. the book holes is amazing.
I can’t think of any ballet movies at the moment.
@ kaat: ooohhhh…. i get it now. that is AWESOME!!! i LOVE to learn too! That’s cool to hear about WW2 from your piont of view. i mean, that’s where it happened. they only came over here for pearl harbor. (december 7th - my b-day!) my grandfather was a pilote in the war. he has some cool pictures.
Comment by Jana — March 30, 2007 #

Hey, where is everyone?
I have a question for you guys (I was going to put it in the forum but it doesnt look like anyone is using it much). I just went to my ballet class (reminder: beginner adult ballet, I did it when I was about 5, but havent done it since and now im 27) and my teacher asked if anyone would be interested in starting pointe work in a few weeks. We have only been doing it for ten weeks so far, so must she have only been referring to the girls who have been dancing for years, then stopped for a while, and now are doing it again? I assumed she couldnt have meant me, but I just wanted to ask you guys because I would love to do it! (I dont want to tell her I want to do it though, and then feel silly when she says that she didnt mean me!).
Thanks!
Comment by Skye — April 3, 2007 #
I don’t know who your teacher meant, but I don’t think it would be a good idea for you to start point yet. you just haven’t been dancing long enough to build enough strength and technique to be ready.
Comment by Marissa — April 3, 2007 #
Give it maybe a year and half or somthing like that and you might be ready.
Comment by Nancy — April 3, 2007 #
Wow, i’m behind! lol, well .. down in melbourne, The Aus Ballet were doing Don Q .. and guess who played the main roll .. Eathin Stifle!! .. (yeah, i cant spell! lol) He was amazing all my friends said .. (I dident get to see him
) But ohh well .. And most of my friends met him .. (and just incase ur wondering wtf is he talking about .. Its the guy of centre stage “Couper” or somthing i think his name is) Once again sorry about the spelling! lol, .. what topic are we on now??
Comment by Dylan — April 3, 2007 #
Hey skye. Rule of thumb: if you can stand on your toe (the tippy top) then you can fiddle with pointe shoes. if you can walk on that bare tippy toe, you can dance. I’m close!! the older one in my class can take a few steps on her toes, but has taken a jazz career path.
Hi dylan and everyone.
I wonder if I will ever be in a dancing play. In a theatrical play, I’m susan in the cat and the canary. if you’re not familiar, it’s about long lost cousins gathering in a hauted house to read their great uncles will. Anna is the lucky heir and if she dies or is proven insane, the next unknown heir gets the fortune. my job (the sexy and pure evil one) is to try and make her go crazy — in turn, driving myself mad. it’s funny!
i’m going to florida!! for spring break and to visit my family. beach, baby!!!!!
Comment by Jana — April 4, 2007 #
My PC is dead, so that’s why I’m silent…
But I like the forum, Skye, so…
Anyway, I would ask the teacher to clarify, just say something like, I’d love to try pointe work if I would be ready one day, but I guess you were talking to the more experienced people last time?
Do you think I could try it in the future?
I know trying it too early is not a wise move.
Then you shouldn’t feel silly, because you show you are taking things seriously.
And hey, a teacher should know how to express herself without causing confusion!

Comment by Jana — April 7, 2007 #
rabbits and eggs are “symbols of new life.” and some people compare jesus rising from the tomb to a chick hatching from its shell.
I like having three sisters, there’s always someone to barrow clothes from. and if you’re bored there’s someone to talk to.

Has anybody heard of that movie that coming out some time this year or next year called “Briggs Ballet”
Comment by Nancy — April 10, 2007 #
Hey Nancy,
I dont know if you or your parents have heard of this or not, but there is a website that I often check before hiring movies for my kids. Its called http://www.kids-in-mind.com and it has reviews that lists all the tiny details about profanity, sex & nudity, violence, etc. Its really handy. There is a review on there for save the last dance, there is nothing for briggs ballet, but maybe thats just cos its not out yet. You should check it out anyway, and go back later and check when briggs ballet comes out. It sounds like an interesting story.
Anyway, maybe you could make a post saying happy birthday site, and everyone could comment under it on why we all appreciate this site. A bit of a thank you to Anita.
And congrats to your Mum. Thats wonderful news. Large families are beautiful. She must be an amazing woman.

No, I haven’t seen that movie “Departed” but have heard of it.
That movie I was talking about “Briggs Ballet” it’s about the Bossov Ballet Theatre and how it got started. I hope since I’m going to thier summer program I can get in it, since they have not done there casting yet. They just came up with the idea last month so there’s a small chance they I may be in it.

my mom works on movies, so sometimes I get to hang out on a movie set. over spring break I even got to intern for her. I also did some extra work one one of the movies, but I didn’t show up on camera.
Comment by Marissa — April 11, 2007 #
I wrote a big long post earlier today, and it still hasnt showed up yet, usually it happens straight away, so I am going to write it again now, so sorry if it eventually comes on and I look like Im repeating myself!
Anyway, firstly I was saying congrats to Nancys mum. Big families are lovely, your mum must be an amazing woman.
Secondly, I was going to mention a website to you and your parents Nancy, called kids-in-mind.com. It has movie reviews from a parents point of view, and it list all the minor details relating to sex, nudity, violence, profanity, etc. I use it sometimes before I hire a new movie for my kids.
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
This is a test. I have tried to post twice today on this heading and it isnt working, but my other post under a different heading worked. Just trying again.
Testing testing…….
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
Ok, so now it works.
Well, what I was trying to say in my other attempts is this (abbreviated now)
1) Congrats to Nancys mum. Big families are lovely. Your mum must be an amazing woman.
2) Nancy, check out http://www.kids-in-mind.com. It has really detailed reviews of movies, going into all the sex, nudity, profanity, violence, etc. I often use it to check out movies for my kids.
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
Aaah, not working again. Ok, maybe its not working cos Im trying to put a link to a website. Let me try this….
http://www.kids-in-mind.com
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
Ok, that worked. This is weird. Ok Nancy, what I have been trying to write is that the above site has movie reviews with detailed descriptions of any profanity, nudity, violence, etc. I often use it when picking movies for my kids. Thought you might be interested. (Save the last dance is on there).
Also was trying to say that your mum must be an amazing woman, and congrats to her. Hope this one works!
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
YAY!!!!
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
Thanks Skye I’ll try out the website.
Comment by Nancy — April 11, 2007 #
nancy. sorry! we misunderstood each other. I know it’s a ballet movie, i was just moving on and talking in general about making other movies, like an American Idol movie.
oo, marissa! what kind of movies? so what’s your mom’s job? the movies have always been infamous. In history, we studied the rise of Hollywoodland. it’s so fascinating. i just wish it wasn’t as negative.
where are you kaat?
Comment by Jana — April 11, 2007 #
Nancy,
the difference between this and a chat room (from your other post in the forum question) is that the conversations stay on here (and the forum too) so your mum could see who and what you are chatting about whenever she wants.
I understand her concerns, but if she read our conversations, Im sure she would agree they are totally innocent.
Everyone seems to like the forum idea better. Maybe you should email anita if your password is not working. She set up your account so she should be able to help.
Hope it starts working for you!
Comment by Skye — April 11, 2007 #
my mom is a costumer, most of the stuff she’s done is pretty low budget stuff. the one I worked on over spring break is a made for lifetime christmas movie. I do get to meet some of the actors she works with though, I have a picture with me and Josh Hartnett.
Comment by Marissa — April 11, 2007 #
Marissa that’s really cool that yo get to meet actors.
Yall I know this is not a chat room. But we are talking about books, movies, ourselves and other stuff more then ballet. Since this site was truly meant to be a ballet site in the first place.

Jana: “I’m also on the accerlerated path. 3 months — and i’m almost on my toes!” - what exactly is the accelerated path?
I used to do quite a lot of dancing but had to stop when I moved to Africa, 4 years ago. I finally found a teacher at the begining of this year so I started ballet again and I LOVE it (well, I always loved it, it’s good I found her because I was starting to get really depressed without any dance classes).
I am looking for a place (preferably in Europe) where I could train to become pro. I do realise that my chances of becoming a great ballerina are *quite* small but I still want to train as much as possible because I can’t live without ballet…
Basically I am looking for a private teacher or a school that would accept me even though I am nowhere near most girls my age (I just turned 18 ) but would still give me an excellent training.
I find that sometimes it’s all or nothing, you are either excellent and have always danced or you are not taken seriously and can only take 1 or 2 classes a week…
So please help me, tell me if you know anyone who could help me, or if you’ve heard of websites where I could find information etc…
Thanks!
Comment by Flore — April 12, 2007 #
Hi Flore,
You could always go to a ballet boarding school if you really want to become a pro. some one on this site asked the same question so if you go to “only ballet boarding schools” then there’s a list on boarding schools that you might become a pro at.
Hope I helped.
Comment by Nancy — April 12, 2007 #
even if I am already 18? Isn’t it for younger people? I’ll go see anyways. Thank you!
Comment by Flore — April 12, 2007 #
Hey Marissa, that is so cool!
speaking of josh hartnett, has anyone seen lucky number slevin? anyone older than 13, hopefully
Hey flore. My teacher just has a quick and intensive way of training, so when i prepare for the spring show, I can slow down and work harder on things i’ve already learned. it’s because i’m so old (17). i have to learn everything quickly to kept of with my age group. i guess it’s mainly her style, and my relentless practicing. it also helps that this is truly a natural talent for me. Wow. you travel alot! where all have you been?
does anyone know anything about “Bloch Tmt”? it’s the new pointe shoe
Comment by Jana — April 14, 2007 #
Jana, never heard of that new pointe shoe.
Flore, I wrote some people but they have not written back yet. But there is one school It’s not a boarding school but they have really good training it’s called Ballet Intensive Moscow it’s not really in Moscow but in Chicgo.
Here’s there site http://www.BIM ballet.com
Comment by Nancy — April 15, 2007 #
the bloch tmt is this new thermal shoe that like molds to your foot with heat. i found it in a ballet magazine, but can’t seem yo google it too well. sounds cool though

@ Nancy: Good bye and good luck with everything.
@ Flore: My school has a special extra placement class for people who started later but still want to go profesional or are taking it seriously anyway. Maybe there are such things in other schools also (I’m in Belgium, so I guess that’s a bit too far away for you).
My teacher also suggested I take summer intensives to progress more quickly.

hi kaat!
hey anna. i heard about that shooting. wow. i didn’t expect at a college level, though.
Comment by Jana — April 17, 2007 #
@ Jana: ehm… feeling dumb now… which school are you talking about? I don’t - or, well, maybe I do, but not one I could ever get in, starting this late.
I thought Flore was asking about a school which would accpet her as a late(r) starter.
@ Flore: I sent you a private message trough the forum.
Comment by Kaat — April 18, 2007 #
i could never get in, but the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. Yep, that’s where i’d go. but i’m a bit late……
What’s the forum?
Comment by Jana — April 18, 2007 #
Going back a bit Nancy was kind of wierd. Do you guys and girls agree with me on that?
Comment by Anna — April 18, 2007 #
Anna,
I think its just that her parents are careful about her using the internet (understandably, from a mums point of view!) and so they didnt like the fact that this was turning into a bit of a ‘chat’ room, going off topic and such.
Jana, did you not realise there is a forum now?? At the top right of this page under ‘pages’ it says forum. Click on that and make yourself a user name. Anita started it as a more efficient way of asking questions and chatting. I like using it more than this blog. (Although I still keep checking this blog anyway cos people keep writing on it!).

hi everyone im libi im 14 and i am starting ballet soon. im worried it will be too hard… what do you reckon?
Comment by Liberty — April 19, 2007 #
btw, i think this is a great website!! lol
Comment by Liberty — April 19, 2007 #
and to actually answer the original question, i think that most late starting dancers are just looking for more info about dancing on the net, and have come across this site, coz, i mean if youre 4 years odl and starting ballet youre not going to do any research on the net. lol
Comment by Liberty — April 19, 2007 #
Hey Liberty!!! I’m Jana and I started a few months ago. It’s not hard, it’s wonderful!! I’m so late because ballet never occured to me. I just realized this is something i want to do and so, why not? And if you have that attitude, you listen to your teacher, take advantage of that barre, learn the proper terms and do your best. you’ll surprise yourself in no time! So where are you from?
yeah, nancy seemed alittle up tight. but i agree, it might be because she’s under strict rules.
i’m gonna convert to the forum, but dont worry, i’ma still here too!

Comment by Jana — May 3, 2007 #
@ nancy: welcome back
@ jana: am beating you to it! Our show is in 2 weeks, 6 sold-out performances and I’m SO nervous.
We (adults) are doing swan lake with the little kids (we’re the lake, not kidding), we’re doing a Bollywood thing and also, of course with all the others, a finale.
And I’m sure I’m goint to mess up for everyone and will die of embarassment. Ha. Or not. My teacher didn’t kick me out or put me in back, so he must think I’ll be ok.
We also did a bit of waterballet for a videotape, didn’t see the result, but it was fun anyway.
Comment by Kaat — May 3, 2007 #
that sounds cool!!! what are they like? I’ve done so many plays, so I have a feeling, but somehow, I think it will be different. Every time I worry though, I remember it’s in june. But what’s gonna happen when june comes around?…..ooo, I’m scaring myself!
but good luck!

Okay, I injured my toe, so does anyone have any advise for keeping up. at the moment, I’m just doing everything but putting pressure on it, but I’m not keeping up. Are there alternitive excersises I can do to strengthen my feet, or am I going to have to wait it out and fall behind?
Comment by Jana — May 7, 2007 #
The lake: flat on the floor, making waves with our butt, and supporting the kids in cambré and other movements (they sit on us, like a chair) and we also have to help them remember what to do next, and then making waves rolling on the floor (kind of modern).
Comment by Kaat — May 8, 2007 #
hey everyone, i have done a few classes of ballet, and so far its really good!! obviously, its very hard as i am so far behind, but there are only lke 3 or 4 other girls in my class so everyone gets lots of individual attention. im picking up the excersises quickly… but there is one (i dont know the name of it) where you kind of todu i thinnk and pirouette, but i seriosly cant do a pirouette! i didnt even try to in class… what excersises can i do to help? and mabey can anyone explain it to me step by step? like, from first position…blablabla thank you so much!
Comment by Liberty — May 9, 2007 #
@Jana: what kind of toe injury? and if you have not already done so, tell your teacher. if it is broken you should absloutely not be putting weight on it, otherwise it depends on what you did to it, and your teacher should be able to offer some guidance.
@Liberty: the best way to improve your pirouette is to practice balencing in pirouette position. try doing the exercises with pirouettes in them that you have been doing in class and instead of the pirouette, releve into pirouette position ond hold as long as you can. once you have the releve down, the pirouette will become much easier.
Comment by Marissa — May 9, 2007 #
Marissa’s right. Thats what really helped me with my pirouettes. My main problem was the balance thing, so just practicing staying in the pirouette position was very helpful. After that, you also need to make sure you are spotting, no trying to ‘push’ yourself around to forcefully, starting with a good demi-plie and with your feet in the correct position to start off with (that was another of my problems) and pulling up through the body.
But practice the balancing first! It should help a lot. Good luck
Comment by Skye — May 9, 2007 #
I slpit my toe nail. It’s not graphic or anything. It’s just split horizontily across the top and its growing off. It’ll be about a month before it’s gone. I just can’t put pressure on it. My teacher does know, but we’re just working out a routine at the moment, so thankfully, I don’t need to practise on my toes. it’s sure killing my progress though!
whoa, kaat, explain that again!
and I know that wasnt directed at me, but thanks for the tip!!!
Comment by Jana — May 11, 2007 #
@ Jana: Explain what again?

hey everybody! look up (on youtube) herbert gronemeyer’s music video where Polina Seminova does ballet. It’s things like THAT that make me want to go far in dance!!!! It’s soooo beautiful!!!
Comment by Jana — May 22, 2007 #
Hello and Hi everyone;
I studied ballet for 12 years and even received a dance scholarships to college. I got to college, let my boyfriend at the time, now exhusband tell me my I was only better than the people I was around, but not overall that good, dance wasn’t a practical profession, blacks girls didn’t really do ballet, etc.
So I stopped, switched majors and earned a BA in business rather than BFA in Classical Cheorgraphy. I have been in corporate America 20 years now and desperately want out. I am currently layed off (again and DON’T want to go back!!!)
Would love to open a dance studio has always been a dream of mine, but haven’t fiqured out how to get started. NE suggestions
BTW, I am 42 and could stand to lose a few pounds, but its coming off.
Comment by Victoria B. Edwards — May 30, 2007 #
wow… what a story. Do you regret you stopped because of the pressures of being a black ballerina? I’ve always believed anyone could do anything. I’ve always believed that because of the way I live my life. — but anyway, I am focused on the more modern ballet and when I was flipping through a ballet magazine, I must say I was in awe when I saw performance photos of a black ballerina. — but like I said, maybe that’s just because I like the new. Please do what makes you happy. It’s your life and you only get one.
Comment by Jana — May 30, 2007 #
Hey everyone!!!! I got my first pointe shoes!!! but don’t worry —- I’m NOT leaving the barre with them
Comment by Jana — May 30, 2007 #
Jana: how exciting, just remember that to strengthen yourself for pointe you must keep working on your demi-pointe.
Victoria: there are two things you need in order to start a studio, students and a place to teach them. some of the studios I have danced at started out at comunity or senior centers, but anywhere you can find a room to use can work. one way of getting students is to offer classes through local preschools, then older siblings and friends of the kids who take classes there start coming to the studio, as well as the kids themselves as they get older. one thing to remember is that more kids start taking dance when they are young, so at first most of your students will be young. at first you will pretty much have to place students in classes based on their age, and if you have any students with dance experience, they may need to be placed with a older group. if you have any specific questions let me know, I’ve worked at dance studios of different stages of development, so I have a good idea of how to go about running a studio. (the studio I teach at right now just finished its second year and I’m in charge of developing the ballet program, so I have some experience with beginning studios.)
Comment by Marissa — May 30, 2007 #
Yes ma’am. strength, flexibility, balance and work. i’m working everyday. and it’s really not to prove myself to anyone — i honestly enjoy it. i bought a barre to work everyday carefully, not carelessly. it’s wonderful!
wait, marissa, how old are you? you teach? that’s awesome!!!
Comment by Jana — May 31, 2007 #
yes I teach. I’m 19, but I started dancing when I was 5 and the studios I trained at had very intensive programs, both for future professionals and future teachers.
Comment by Marissa — May 31, 2007 #
cool. yeah, i thought you were young. that’s neat that you teach — like at that age. i guess, now that i think about it, it’s not weird. my teacher is 40, but my substitute is 18……
Comment by Jana — June 1, 2007 #
considering I decided I wanted to teach when I was 5, I did spend 13 years training. that’s a lot longer than most people spend training for their jobs. many studios have juniors and seniors in high school teach.
Comment by Marissa — June 1, 2007 #
heyyy everyone - i was just going to say thanks for all the advice and motivation for me to start ballet again, ive been doing it for about 2 months now and i love it!!! the truth is i probably wouldnt have been bothered to start again if i hadnt found this site! its fantastic, its the first place i check for answers to my questions. keep up the good work! and congrats on getting ur pointe shoes jana! how long have you been dancing for?
Comment by Liberty — June 1, 2007 #
hey! i guess you could call me a late starter! i started ballet when i was 14. i am now nearly sixteen and am doing my grade 4 ballet! ballet is my life even tho im not mych good at it! id love to be a professional dancer but i suppose its too late for me! which im gutted about! I get to do pointe next year which i am absolutely thrilled about and cannot wait! I always had an interest in ballet when iwas younger but didnt do anything about it until a few years ago. is 16 late to be starting pointe work?
Comment by siwan — June 1, 2007 #
16 is late to start point work compared to students that start at 11 or 12, but those students usually started dancing when they were younger than 7. the important thing is that it is the right time for you.
Comment by Marissa — June 1, 2007 #
hey liberty. I’ve been in ballet for 6 months. my teacher suggested pointe shoes (even though it’s early) because I have excellerated in ballet and can already stand on my toes with a padded slipper. it busts up your toes though, so now i work in the safety of pointe shoes on the barre. i can’t leave the barre though :(. Balance has been my biggest problem, but i found a few excersises to help.
hey siwan. i’m a later starter (started at 16). I think if we train freakishly hard we could be close to a pro. but as we’re so far behind…… but that’s okay. they’re are still many paths to take in the field. As for pointe work, I don’t know. Here, see if you can stand on your toes (not the tippy top, but get up there) for a whole minute. Do that a few times a day, but 2min’s the next day and 3 the next. That’s how I train my feet to get closer to pointe. And marissa’s right. when YOU’RE ready.
Comment by Jana — June 1, 2007 #
Hey Everybody!!!!! I got pointe shoes recently (tuesday), have broken them in successfully, can not only go up on pointe with ease and work on them while using the barre — but I just took 20 consecutive steps ON POINTE with NO BRARRE!!!! AAAHHHHH!!!!

ok no it didnt so i have to write it all over again i am having a dilemma because i love ballet like absoloutely love it i did it when i was young so i can say i started when i was three but then i stopped and that is the most regretful thing i have ever done because my dream is to go on pointe but the problem is there are no classes for late starters who arent even teenagers like me because hahahehe im the youngest im 11 but very tall anyway the dilemma is i have a best friend who is shorter than me and has nearly reached pointe and shes only eleven nearly tweleve anyway next year i am starting ballet again at the start of the dancing year and i am doing ballet but i really dont feel comfortable prancing around in a leotard because all the girls are waif thin and i have like not got this wafy thin figure anyway my other dilemma is i want to go on pointe as soon as possible (when i say that i do not mean like next year july when iv started in january) no but like when im fourteen fifteen sixteen anyway so i do not know if i shoudl go in my friends class with the great dancers because that means harder training and i do nt want to go in the juniors because on wednesday night and i watched the juniors ballet and it was really boring as for the older kids theirs was amazing they did welcome back to the orient and so please give me advice should i go for the older class or the juniors and try my hardest and for me well i also live in australia in perth actually so there cya matees mw

Comment by Alex — December 12, 2007 #
Hey Alex!
It’s jana - thank-you so much! Well do I have advice for you! So you want a story like mine…. late starter, want to be on pointe… Listen to my advice - i’ve been there:
I’m not rich, but I have a home studio. If there is no room for that at your home, clear a space, just for you and PRACTISE EVERY DAY! Find some good music, a good place in your mind and dance, stretch, strengthen, learn evey term in the book. Let it be a big piece of your life. It is so worthwhile. With ballet, I found my place, my harmony.
DON’T EVER judge yourself angainst someone else - it will crush you. Instead, make personal goals. Goals about wieght, touching you toes, going on pointe. You and your teacher can discuss this. You dance for you, so don’t compare yourself because there IS someone who is better and thinner. I was the slower, and yes curvier (at a whopping 113 pounds at 17) in my class. It just goes to show we’re all different. Don’t let weight slow you down. You’re beautiful.
Don’t sweat the loetard. They are fun! And comfortable! I actually have to wear little girl patty-hose because they are the only pink ones I can find. They create roles under my leotard because they are so tight - it drives me mad! it happens to everyone! If you are allowed, wear leg warmers or shorts. I think they help
So you’re practising everyday and you see no progess - DON’T WORRY! when progession hits - it hits hard. It’ll take about 2 months. Don’t get discouraged. After 9 freakin months, I finally touched my toes. You can’t imagine that excitement!
I have my own barre - it was only 50 dollars - but you can use a counter top or stairs - just keep stretching!!!
Everyday - or at least every other day - stretch, practise the basics, then go over everything your class has just learned, then give yourself a free dance. Watch plenty of youtube vidoes and books really do help.
Pointe is really rare to go on early. i’m older and my body was ready. Give yourself a year. You’ll see major progress in 3 or 4 months and you’ll be a ballerina at about 8. Stck to it. I know what that regret feels like - I wish I had started earlier! It is so fun. There is alot of sweat involved though.
In class - stay in the lowest level possible. You would rather be the better one, knowing what’s going on rather than feeling like your slipping behind. Please, please stay in the lower class - dance with the 5 year olds if you have to
Can you take individual classes on the side? That would help. And in class - when you push yourself, do it to impress the teacher, NEVER another student! Always focuse on YOUR feet and the teacher - nothing else. I mean, don’t ignore everyong else - just keep your eye and the ball.
Last advice for the moment - (because this got long:) HAVE FUN!!!!
Look, I’m 18, dancing for a year, on pointe for 7 months, and I actually TEACH 3 classes ages 4 - 9. I think I reached my goals. You can do this! Have fun, work hard, and dear lord take care of your body and mind :):):)
Have a merry christmas and a WONDERFUL new year!!!
Good luck!!! Hope to hear from you soon!

Hey! Nice to hear from you!
So — er…… I see you don’t use punctuation - haha! j/k!
I don’t care
Anyway - thanks for liking my advice! I’m a teacher now so it’s good to know someone likes my advice now and then.
Don’t be jealous of your cousin! Please! It will make your own progression seem slower! And I really mean “touch my toes” flexibility-wise. I can only touch them while sitting, not standing:( but i’m working on it! I broke my tailbone a year and a half ago, so that is why I’m unflexible.
You know what - I stood on my toes too
Everyone told me how terrible that was. Look, just divert your attention to something else. Ready for it?
The most important thing in ballet is your arch. Do ‘releves’ all the time. evey chance you get. stretch and push and try to get higher and higher. Make sure you stay on the proper part of your feet — don’t go up to your toes. That doesn’t help you in any way. ‘Releve’ in patterns of 16, Hold your releve for a full minute, Roll your arch along a tennis ball — all of that will help. In a month - your arches will be strong, high and beautiful. Talk to your teacher about them to make sure you are doing them right. Then you’ll be set
Wait wait - you don’t have set lessons? Or you do?
oh yeah - practise everyday will really boost your progress!
so you are living in austalia? awesome mate! And are you also from israel? cool!
so what’s the story about your cousin on pointe but she doesn’t want to be deal? oo oo! tell me!
Merry Christmas!

And one more thing is….
I am no longer eleven and also i was reading throught te comments and i fond one about a girrl whho could already stand on her toes so she went n too point well…
i can already stand oon my toes and walk on my toes and do a 2nd arabesque while oon pointe
Comment by alex — July 4, 2008 #
attitude leap? Is that where you pose into the attitude once you’re in the air? You know, there are so many ways to leap with your arms and legs. That’s my guess. =)
Comment by Jana — July 4, 2008 #
Okay- I just need to get this out there. Not all the people who start late do it because of EXERCISE! I’ve been wanting to do ballet since the fourth grade and I’m a freshman in highschool and FINALLY I am going to a legit ballet studio. To all the late starters- don’t give up! I know it is hard, believe me I do. But, there ARE professional dancers who started late. For example Johan Kobborg, age 16. xxx
